Complimentary Complaining

Why do we complain? Why do we even bother? Does it make us feel good? Is it just a way to get thoughts of anxiety out of our head or off of our chest? Do we feel we have a general grievance?
Usually complaining comes attached with anger. Anger is never a good thing. It is a negative reaction that affects us physically and emotionally.
It triggers the body's fight-or-flight response, causing the adrenal glands to flood the body with the stress hormones - adrenaline and cortisol.
Blood leaves the brain and organs and goes into the muscles in preparation for action. We are now ready, willing and able to protect ourselves as dictated by our animal instincts.
Can you imagine being in this state constantly and what it does to us? The constant flood of stress hormones can create many health problems, such as headaches, digestion problems with abdominal pain, insomnia, high blood pressure, skin problems, heart attacks and strokes.
Some people go beyond complaining straight into raging. Their blood boils with their eyes bulging, teeth clenching, adrenaline pumping, and fists swinging?
Understandably, there are valid reasons why a person can be enraged; crimes; injustice; a threat or loss to their body, property, self-esteem, dignity or simply not getting what they expected.
It behooves us not to let the little things get in the way of happiness. For instance if we just finished grocery shopping and we get home and find that the bagger forgot to bag our tomatoes. Do we go all the way back to the store, tell the bagger off for being so incompetent and smash the tomatoes in his face?
What if we order a pizza that is supposed to arrive in 30 minutes or less, but arrives an hour later? Should we call the news stations or 911 (emergency)?
So we don’t feel entirely helpless, there are times when complaining is good. It depends on how we complain and the anger we attach to it. Some of us take matters into our own hands without caring about the consequences; like the woman who was suspicious of her boyfriend cheating.
She tried to catch him in the act with another woman so she climbed through the chimney and got stuck. Emergency workers had to tear down the fireplace, knock down a wall, and excavate the woman who emerged covered in soot.
If we are going to complain, it is much more satisfying to state the problem calmly. Almost as if you are a mediator; as if you’re not a part of it. Make sure the other person understands what you are saying, even if you have to repeat it or rephrase it. Once you’re on the same page and you are communicating in a respectful way, the solution will come.
We have to hone our communication skills and tell people what we want. Though at times, it is difficult, try to say and do everything with love.
If you find yourself angry, step back, relax and approach the problem again. If this doesn’t work, ask for assistance from a friend, coworker, or your higher power. Where there is a problem, there is a resolution.

There are always sniffling whiney ppl who will always look for things to complain about, even if they have to make things up.
The insane are like that.
Me and my girlfriend have troubles with this one. It's all because this cynical society of ours seems to get drunk on the very dregs of its own sorrows. It's like, we are too afraid to take a chance at happiness so we wallow in complaints and sarcasm. That space between stands as virtually unmarked territory.
Thank you for helping to make it known.
I agree with ubermouth. I'm sure the yorkshire ripper thought he was reasonable and his victims were the unreasonable ones.
Some of the apparently unreasonable have good reason when you look closer and the accusers are the unreasonable ones.
It all comes out when the facts hit the cold light of day.
*nods* when we want to complain, we sometimes should just hold our tongues first and let the feeling fade *in order to avoid being unreasonable and unjust*
Uber,
Yes and those are the people who need the most love. Their insecurities have eaten away their Soul and they are searching for signs of life.
To some, complaining is an art that no one wants to buy.
Aspiring,
Some people are more comfortable staying in turmoil. They are afraid of getting hurt so they never venture out of that chaos.
"That space between stands as virtually unmarked territory."
Beautiful. Very well put.
Thanks for dropping by, hope to see you again.
Winston,
It all comes down to karma. We get what we give and if we treat people like dogs, we are bound to get bitten.
Thanks for dropping by.
Eve,
Simple eloquence my dear. :D
Great responses Alexys !
Yes, I think even the soulless are wounded soldiers who need the most love.
For a law essay I had to research Charles Manson, my choice topic.
It was heart breaking to see his back ground and catalogue of hurts/injustices thrust upon him.
He could not have turned out any way , but as he did.
I am a firm believer in looking behind the actions to ask 'why' and 'how'?
You know Alexys, your site is like a healing center, a public service.
Hey Alexys,
There is complaining and complaining: there is complaining like the one you described (full of anger, rage...irrational) which makes people's blood boil beyond 100ÂșC *nodding*! And then you have the rational complaining: you cooly, calmly expose your problem without insulting nor beating up others.
The most interesting thing is: the irrational complaint rarely obtains what it wants; whereas rational complaint almost always obtains what it wants. I have a book on how to complain lol...
"eyes bulging, teeth clenching, adrenaline pumping, and fists swinging?" LOL LOL oh my, I have witnessed some people in this exact state...*nodding*. Do you think that people choose to aggravate themselves...I tend to think they do...
I agree with you "valid reason why a person can be enraged; crimes; injustice, a threat or loss to their body, property, self-esteem, dignity" these are terrible, even before these one must know how to complain, and he must choose to complain correctly (i.e. rationally).
LOL excellent example of the tomatoes not being bagged; but to answer your question: no, we should not do that! We should go back, talk with the bagger if he insists that he bagged them, then ask the manager to see the surveillance cameras (the ones that control the tellers lol)...it can be a solution, don't you think so?
LOL LOL the pizza example is smashing LOL LOL...what do you do in this case?
The lady's example is also good...she was completely out of her mind *nodding*!
With this I leave you, my friend; and I leave the blogsphere for today :D!
Tomato Cheers
P.S: I saw the custom mugs, they are gorgeous!!! :)
Uber,
Manson is a very interesting and scary character. I once saw a biography on him that said he wanted to be musician and the killings stemmed from his frustration of not becoming one.
"I am a firm believer in looking behind the actions to ask 'why' and 'how'?"
Very true.
"You know Alexys, your site is like a healing center, a public service."
That's nice. I hope it CAN help people and not incite riots. ;D
Max,
"...the irrational complaint rarely obtains what it wants; whereas rational complaint almost always obtains what it wants. I have a book on how to complain lol..."
That's really cool. A whole book on complaining?
"Do you think that people choose to aggravate themselves...I tend to think they do..."
I think some people are predisposed to anger and chaos. I find that certain cultures such as Latin, Greek, and Italian to name a few, are more prone to be excited/passionate (at least the ones I know.) They are animated when they speak, and sometimes get angry and get it out of their system, then they are done. It's like they had to reset themselves.
"We should go back, talk with the bagger if he insists that he bagged them, then ask the manager to see the surveillance cameras (the ones that control the tellers lol)...it can be a solution, don't you think so?"
Usually they will put the groceries (if they are not anything dairy or meat products) at the front desk and give the person time to return. They usually take your word for it and just give you the item.
"LOL LOL the pizza example is smashing LOL LOL...what do you do in this case?"
This has happened to me and I just called the corporate offices and they sent a free pizza.
"The lady's example is also good...she was completely out of her mind *nodding*!"
Ha ha ha ha. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorn. I would have loved to have seen her face. Why the chimney? Couldn't she just hide under the bed like any other woman. LOL.
Cherry Tomato Cheers
"P.S: I saw the custom mugs, they are gorgeous!!! :)"
Like you my darling. :D
I sense people will complain as a way to distract themselves from the underlying cause of their internal anger or discomfort. It can seem easier to postpone or ignore difficult situations or feelings, yet it doesn't make them go away. In fact, repressing feelings simply builds them up. Complaining is actually an invitation to look deeper inside yourself and solve your own issues.
Liara,
I like your perception. I guess complaining can be construed as a cry for help or perhaps something deeper. Ignoring feelings can cause an explosion of feelings; rage, etc. I didn't realize that repressing the feelings caused them to grow, but it does make sense. Looking deeper into the problem can cause some solace, but people have to be willing to dig.
Thanks for your insightful remarks.
Hey Alexys,
"That's really cool. A whole book on complaining?" - yeah, my PR Professor wrote a book on it (how to write complaint letters), and she teaches how to rationally complain...it is very cool indeed.
"I think some people are predisposed to anger and chaos. I find that certain cultures such as Latin, Greek, and Italian to name a few, are more prone to be excited/passionate (at least the ones I know.) They are animated when they speak, and sometimes get angry and get it out of their system, then they are done. It's like they had to reset themselves." - LOL not the only ones you know...it is true, Latin-Americans, Latin-Europeans (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy) and Greeks are extremely excited/passionate and above all too emotional *nodding*! Anything can set them off, everything is a tragedy; a mess lol....of course there are exceptions within these cultures, but the majority is like that...
LOL that is the right expression "reset themselves"...and sometimes they stop talking to their friends, neighbours over silly things *nodding*...specially outdated codes of honour.
"Usually they will put the groceries (if they are not anything dairy or meat products) at the front desk and give the person time to return. They usually take your word for it and just give you the item." - ah good; because here you could have to reach the point to ask to check the surveillance cameras *nodding*! That is why sometimes people get excited and start insulting the store employees...Latin life, nevermind lol....
"This has happened to me and I just called the corporate offices and they sent a free pizza." - LOL that is awesome! That is why I love the United States (out of embarassment I won't even tell you what would happen in Latin-land lol).
"Ha ha ha ha. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorn. I would have loved to have seen her face. Why the chimney? Couldn't she just hide under the bed like any other woman. LOL." - lol true. LOL LOL LOL under the bed is a good hiding place, indeed...I don't understand the chimney either *nodding*.....
"Cherry Tomato" - I love those in a lavish salad...yummy!
"Like you my darling. :D" - oh, you pamper me too much...you are the best sista in the world :D! Thank you, but I must say:
Look who's talking Cheers!
Alexys, What a coincidence with this post... :) This is great place, I should visit here frequently. There are so many things to learn here. Everyone have different perspectives and it makes this blog really alive.
‘Bout complaining, I could see the bright side of it is the "purpose". But sometime I just can’t be honest to myself about the purpose. If "Win-win” it would be fine even great but if “win-lose” that’s mean I start to pull the trigger. So I better think twice. This is just a little view from my inexperience eyes and my weak English. Honestly English isn’t my native language :)
Thanks to invite me to this awesome place, I really enjoy it. Nice to know you all. Feel free to invite me again.
Best Wishes
~Susanno
Susanno,
I always like to hear different perspectives and you're right, it gives the place a live and hopefully comfortable feel.
You make a good point about win-lose situation. Sometimes we don't know whether we will win or lose, we just have to play. You are doing well with your English. I am impressed.
Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see you again. :D
I just found your blog and I must say your graphics grabbed me. Then I read the post about complaining. Oh my goodness!!! It is so true. Very well put.

Sending love right back. Now open and say, "Aaah."

reminds me of an advert that is aired a lot here in India, it says, "Barriers break when people talk.".
Ajeya,
That sounds like a great ad. Love it! :D
