Turning Point

“You know quite well, deep within you,
that there is only a single magic,
a single power, a single salvation...
and that is called loving.
Well then, love your suffering.
Do not resist it, do not flee from it.
It is only your aversion to it
that hurts, nothing else.”

~Hermann Hesse

“The turning point in the process
of growing up
is when you discover the strength
within you that survives all the hurt.”

Maithri,
You may find it hard to believe but I haven't read it, however I have read it in my dreams. Mr. Hesse is wonderful, I feel I know his work without having read it.

Sending you love and peace. :D

I'll buy Hesse is a great writer, after having read Siddhartha, but I'm not sure the Jewish people of Nazi Germany would agree he is the best. I think it was Schopenhauer that said, "Philosophers are the men who would build wonderful mansions for all the world to look upon whilst living beside them in rude sheds," I agree though, he is a wonderful writer, and his words, in this instance are a trembling of the spirit at bright light.

Another perspective is to realize that hurt, like a sense of suffering, is an illusion we create to distract ourselves from the love we deny we deserve. Still, love is always there, forgiving, waiting for our change of heart.

Gledwood 3/23/2008 4:37 PM

Hey I just read LC's comment above: pain is real! I'm sorry. It's REAL!!!

Liara Covert 3/23/2008 7:36 PM

gledwood, I respect your view about pain. Different perspectives exist on the subject. As an exercise, I would ask you 2 things:
1) why are you so convinced pain is real?
2) how you would describe the process of evolving to where you no longer feel pain? (where you are no longer affected). Think of this in terms of physical or emotional pain.

Some people repress uncomfortable feelings. Other people seek to understand why they have them and learn to let go. Its the learning to let go that some people describe as part of the process of learning to love and forgive. You may be interested in this article:

BT Cassidy,
Thank you for enlightening my world today and sharing that insightful quote by Schopenhauer.

Great to see you here.

Alexys Fairfield 3/23/2008 8:51 PM

Liara,
I think various degrees of hurt can make us feel a myriad of emotions. Some have so much hurt locked inside of them that I believe they can't release it, and thus they feel they are resigned to it. Once it gets to a point of no return, I think people accept that it is the way it should be. At that point it can become illusional and people need to know how to release it from their Soul.

Alexys Fairfield 3/23/2008 8:54 PM

Gleds,
I don't think LC was saying that pain isn't real. She was offering an alternate perspective.

If it hurts it is real. I believe she was suggesting to ascertain why it hurts.

Liara,
Thanks for that great follw-up. :D

very true.. it is when we discover, like the little birds who were patiently taught how to fly, that we can do it on our own.

Alexys Fairfield 3/24/2008 9:51 AM

Narissa,
And when those little birds take flight, it is like they were born to fly - just like us.

Thanks for adding to this stream.

Respectfully, Herman Hesse was not a Nazi, nor did he support Nazism.

The following is from wikipedia:

Hesse observed the rise to power of Nazism in Germany with concern. In 1933, Bertolt Brecht and Thomas Mann made their travels into exile, and in both cases, were aided by Hesse. In this way, Hesse attempted to work against Hitler's suppression of art and literature that protested Nazi ideology.

Hesse, who had long published pieces in German journals and newspapers, spoke publicly in support of Jewish artists and others pursued by the Nazis. However, when he wrote for the Frankfurter Zeitung, he was accused of supporting the Nazis, whom Hesse did not openly oppose.

From the end of the 1930s, German journals stopped publishing Hesse's work, and his work was eventually banned by the Nazis.

Peace to you, M

Maithri,
Thanks for that follow up.

You and Liara are really thorough in your dedication to comments.

Thanks again. :D

"It is only your aversion to it
that hurts, nothing else.”... words to remember, always.

Alexys Fairfield 3/25/2008 12:45 AM

Ajeya,
So true my friend.

Pythia3 3/25/2008 7:44 AM

I have come to "UNDERSTAND" some of what I have learned to be true:
To love oneself unconditionally and completely...every aspect, every darkness, every little fear and secret hiding within the darkness.
I am healing and growing daily - it is a beautiful process.the pain and suffering are beautiful as well - as they both remind me of 'why' I am doing this 'work.'
As a writer; as an empathetic soul; as an admitted indulger . . . I have to be careful not to stay with the pain and suffering any longer than they need to stay with me - LETTING GO...now that is my hardest lesson in this life!
peace sister :)

Hello Alexys,

Hermann Hesse also said "The only certain thing is uncertainty"...and how true this is :D!

Loving is such a magical tool: I am marvelled at it; I confess :)!

"Well them love your suffering." this is a bit difficult but I get what he means: we are to understand suffering, appreciate the fact that it occurs for a specific reason and that it is part of our Karma.

"It is only your aversion to it that hurts, nothing else." indeed...the more we resist the more it will hurt. It is like wanting to face a storm: it is useless and you will end up hurt; whereas if you take cover you not only save yourself but also take the time to think of strategies.

"The turning point in the process of growing up is when you discover the strength within you that survives all the hurt" Yes, yes, yes!!! I have experienced this - it was a hard process, yet extremely rewarding! Now, a person must want to find his/her strength, must want to survive the hurt. Unfortunately there are many who choose not to survive, not to find the strength within *nodding*!

Strength Cheers

Lindy,
You are a whirlwind of passion my sister. A writer sensitive to the ebb and flow of life - the turmoil, harmony and the peace that resides in our Soul no matter what happens. We can't reach the peak of our existence here if we are not willing to go through the gauntlet. As a writer myself, I understand that moment when we all have to face ourselves, climb out of our cacoons and turn into the butterfly.

Letting go is only hard if we hang on.

Alexys Fairfield 3/25/2008 8:27 PM

Max,
"Hermann Hesse also said, "The only certain thing is uncertainty"...and how true this is :D!"

It is so true - like death and taxes. But we know that there is no such thing as death, only rebirth - and unfortunately taxes are taxes no matter how we look at them.

"Loving is such a magical tool: I am marvelled at it; I confess :)!"

It's so magical that it makes us want to get up in the morning. :D

"...love your suffering." this is a bit difficult but I get what he means."

I know exactly what you mean, but I had faith that my readers would understand the dichotomy. If we understand the karma involved, then we are more likely to understand this concept.

"...the more we resist the more it will hurt. It is like wanting to face a storm: it is useless and you will end up hurt; whereas if you take cover you not only save yourself but also take the time to think of strategies."

Sometimes we have to take shelter from the storms to give us time to get our rain shoes. ;D

Alexys,

"It is so true - like death and taxes. But we know that there is no such thing as death, only rebirth - and unfortunately taxes are taxes no matter how we look at them." - LOL LOL indeed, taxes are taxes and they are here to stay too *nodding*.

"It's so magical that it makes us want to get up in the morning. :D" - absolutely! And it also makes us dance before taking our morning coffee lol.

"I know exactly what you mean, but I had faith that my readers would understand the dichotomy. If we understand the karma involved, then we are more likely to understand this concept." - that's right, girl! It is a question of understanding the concept of karma: understanding why we're here; why the things that happen occur...

"Sometimes we have to take shelter from the storms to give us time to get our rain shoes. ;D" - we are on the same page, girl ;D!

Spring Cheers

I am glad I have arrived here today, to find another reinforcement of the magic of love.

Alexys Fairfield 3/26/2008 9:12 PM

Max,
Oh yes, there is much to say about love's dance my dear.

We are on the same dance floor my sista.

Dance Cheers

S.E.,
Yes, isn't love grand?
