Take Off Your Clothes

This is not the title of my sizzling new romance novel that is rapidly heading up the best sellers list, nor is it an instruction that I ever want to hear from an airport security screener.

It’s a title that is as provocative as it is essential and it’s meaning has nothing to do with it’s perception. Let me strip your thoughts for a moment as I elucidate the concept further.

Last week I accompanied my friend at the community swimming pool. He swims laps for conditioning and he is more motivated when someone actually watches him. Knowing that I am a people enthusiast, I was a shoo-in to eyeball his strenuous activities.

Since I am not a swimmer myself, I am usually peripatetic along the side the pool while he swims. Although, I recently discovered that while I speak to him as he swims, he can’t hear a word that I say. Imagine all those conversations that have gone to waste because he couldn’t hear?

I’m talking deep truths, like if Britney Spears will ever have her privacy again or if Paris Hilton will win the Nobel Peace Prize?

The swimming pool is a social gathering for people. They lay around the pool in assorted swimming gear in assuming positions. Those who lay around never touch the water. They lay on their backs or on their stomachs, worshipping the almighty sun god.

If an outsider were to observe this scene, they would see a sea of half naked bodies resembling a scene in Dante’s Inferno. A hedonistic ritual heated by a desire to fulfill superficial ideals of beauty and resigned to the machinations of fooling the eye into distraction.

At poolside, everyone is beautiful. All shapes and sizes are accepted, yet fully clothed they are not. Wearing clothes comes with a price tag and a side of self-loathing.

There is no pretense around the pool. No hidden agendas. No anger. Everyone is free to be who they are. Some people travel to the pool in their bathrobes. When they step into the water, they become one with the water; almost in a meditative sense. They leave all of their worries behind - with their clothes.

The pool has a hotel feel. People are happy, friendly, free. They are on vacation from their troubles, jobs, lives. I began to think about why those same people are friendly by the pool, but when I see them fully dressed going about their business, they seem to be disconsolate. Perhaps their clothes imprison their spirits.

As I was contemplating this, my friend was busy talking to me, but I didn’t hear a word he said. Now he knew how I felt after all those times when I spoke to him. When he finally got my attention, I thought to myself, I couldn’t help but to think, “Karma.” It couldn’t have been more perfect; but then again karma is always perfect, that’s why it’s karma.

As I watched people pack up their sunblock, towels, sunglasses, iPods, BlackBerrys, iPhones, robes, clothing, newspapers and magazines, while others emerged from the water, I knew that there was something more to this concept.

Taking off your clothes doesn’t mean stripping. It’s taking off your inner garments and letting your Soul show. It’s being fully conscious of where you are, what you do and how you do it. It’s being in touch with the real you and not having to swim for it.

Your photo reminds me of a magazine which came through our door the other day, addressed to the previous owner. It's called 'Stuff' and it's full of pictures of scantily clad young women holding electronic gizmos. I get the feeling it's aimed at guys. I've never seen so many pictures of girls in bikinis listening to iPods and operating satellite navigation systems. I kind of like the photos but I don't think I'll subscribe.

Seriously though, there's a lot of stuff in this post of yours. And karma is key, I think. We just need to peel it all off. Then we're Us.

So long as people are focused on superficial appearances, status and reputations, then its hard for thsoe people to move beyond that. However, we each decide how we will choose to think, feel and react. What other people do or don't doesn't have to matter. We can choose to uncover the truth and unleash our soul.

Alexys Fairfield 4/02/2008 8:29 PM

Simon,
Funny you should say that. I would have preferred a photo of a male, but I searched my usual photo service and I couldn't find any. They were mostly women. I have heard of Stuff magazine. I guess its like a seduction bible for some men. LOL.

I like your karma analogy. We have to peel it off to get to the pulp of our Soul. :D

Liara,
I think people who are focused on the superficial don't know how to get past the shell of themselves. They would rather polish the exterior while the interior becomes delapidated, and instead of repairing the inside, they try to cover up their insecutities with pretty colors.

Great observation and analogy to each us stripping the facade away and being!

Alexys Fairfield 4/03/2008 10:35 AM

Mark,
In this case, stripping can be enlightening. :D

If I got the message right, stripping off means owning our own personality and being, and being able to accept ourselves, and accept others, without having to be "better" people (Better meaning becoming more famous, richer, smarter).

Haney 4/03/2008 7:03 PM

Well, as long you "strip" at the right place :D

Liara Covert 4/03/2008 11:14 PM

Alexys, you make great points. I sense that as people learn to step back from what they think they know, even with something as simple as taking a vacation, this is a step toward rediscovering the hidden soul. People tend to uncover great things unexpectedly. This reminds me of the power of "eureka moments" that transform lives for the better.

I just wanted to tell you that I love the way you write. You have a gift with words.

Max 4/04/2008 12:59 PM

Hey Alexys,

For a moment I thought this title was an imperative to us all LOL :)!

"nor is it an instruction that I ever want to hear from an airport security screener" - LOL LOL LOL you know?

What? Your friend needs a spectator to swim? This is the first time I ever hear of this...
"Imagine all those conversations that have gone to waste because he couldn't hear?" - yeah, when we swim we only hear the sound of the body sliding through the water...it is a magical moment! I love swimming!

"I'm talking deep truths, like if Britney Spears will ever have her privacy again or if Paris Hilton will win the Nobel peace Prize?" - LOL LOL LOL LOL you kill me LOL....of course not to the second question, and I hope so to the first....

"When they step into the water, they become one with the water; almost in a meditative sense" - so true! I remember that when I used to swim (3,5 km three times a week) I used to see myself blending in the water just like instant coffee in a hot mug! It is indescribable!

Yes, Karma is always perfect, always exact, always just!
"It's being in touch with the real you and not having to swim for it" - beautifully put! And true...did you know that in mysticism, a naked body means being free of the chains of limited thought, being free of old patterns, being freed of the chains of matter? It is a state when we see beyond the apparent reality, when we no longer allow our minds to be narrow...we expand; we become closer to our real Self!

Beautiful article, dear :)!

I wish you a blessed weekend :D!

Stripped mind Cheers

Aries,
Yes, you got the message. Stripping is embracing ourselves in totality and finding our Soul.

Alexys Fairfield 4/04/2008 8:06 PM

Haney,
Yes, there is stripping and then STRIPPING. ;D

Alexys Fairfield 4/04/2008 8:10 PM

Liara,
"People tend to uncover great things unexpectedly." So true. Necessity is the mother of invention. I love it when something dawns on me that was always there. I call those the "duh" moments. ;D

Thanks for that addition.

Alexys Fairfield 4/04/2008 8:13 PM

Leisa,
Thank you for your generous words. I appreciate you taking the time to drop by and say hello today. Hope to see you again soon.

Alexys Fairfield 4/04/2008 8:24 PM

Max,
"What? Your friend needs a spectator to swim? This is the first time I ever hear of this."

He likes the support for motivation. I'm like the rabbit for dog racing.

"...when we swim we only hear the sound of the body sliding through the water...it is a magical moment! I love swimming!"

Oh, how poetic. I imagine it is peaceful. The water holds solace.

"I remember that when I used to swim (3,5 km three times a week) I used to see myself blending in the water just like instant coffee in a hot mug! It is indescribable!"

Very impressive my dear. I can appreciate the discipline involved and the dichotomy; it's strenuous, yet relaxing. The people I observe have that discipline. One girl does about 50 laps nonstop. The pool is half the size of an Olympic pool.

"...did you know that in mysticism, a naked body means being free of the chains of limited thought, being free of old patterns, being freed of the chains of matter? It is a state when we see beyond the apparent reality, when we no longer allow our minds to be narrow...we expand; we become closer to our real Self!"

Yes, that is awesome!

Thanks for the weekend wishes and the same to you dear.

Mind Less Cheers

Alexys,

“He likes the support for motivation. I'm like the rabbit for dog racing.” – LOL I see…

“Oh, how poetic. I imagine it is peaceful. The water holds solace.” – indeed, water holds solace :D! How come you do not swim, dear?

“Very impressive my dear.” – thank you *bowing*!

“I can appreciate the discipline involved and the dichotomy; it's strenuous, yet relaxing. The people I observe have that discipline. One girl does about 50 laps nonstop. The pool is half the size of an Olympic pool.” – it involves a lot of discipline, indeed. But then again what doesn’t? Even love involves a certain level of discipline (at least real love)! 50 laps on a semi-Olympic pool? Very good: 1, 25 km *clap clap clap*!

“Yes, that is awesome!” – utterly awesome :D!!!!

“Thanks for the weekend wishes and the same to you dear.” – you are welcome, dear! And thanks, I did have a great weekend *bowing*! I gather you have one too ;D!

High Spirits Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 4/08/2008 12:04 AM

Max,

"How come you do not swim, dear?"

It's just not my thing. I am not into the smell and taste of chlorine.
: -(

"Even love involves a certain level of discipline (at least real love)!"

Applause! (Take a bow)

That is an excellent point. Love does involve lots of discipline and dedication where your heart is thoroughly exercised.

Weekends are always fun. Here's to an awesome week.

Awesome Cheers

Max 4/08/2008 9:24 AM

Alexys,

“It's just not my thing. I am not into the smell and taste of chlorine.” – I totally get you, girl! I remember that my eyes would always get red when I’d step out of the pool, and the smell of chlorine would take ages to go away even after washing the hair…a complete mess! Still I loved those moments!

“Applause! (Take a bow)” – thank you *bowing*!!!

“That is an excellent point. Love does involve lots of discipline and dedication where your heart is thoroughly exercised.” – Touché, dear!!! But the result of it is so delightful, so rewarding (I bet you can tell that I am in love LOL)…so Divine!

“Weekends are always fun. Here's to an awesome week.” – Thank you, love :D!

Fantastic Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 4/08/2008 4:00 PM

Max,

"I remember that my eyes would always get red when I’d step out of the pool, and the smell of chlorine would take ages to go away even after washing the hair…a complete mess! Still I loved those moments!"

And it's the joy of those moments that will carry you. Every time you think of them, you relive them, so in essence you get to experience them as many times as your memory allows.

“I bet you can tell that I am in love LOL)…so Divine!"

I know, I can hear your heart in your voice. Ain't love grand!

Grand Love Cheers

Alexys Fairfield,
I admire your insights:
Most of us..
..'polish the exterior while the interior becomes delapidated, and instead of repairing the inside, they try to cover up their insecutities with pretty colors..'
Thanks for sharing.
God bless.
