The Law Of Animal Attraction

The mating dance is a fierce tango that gives our heart a good workout and leaves us breathless. It is a dance that we all wish to perform with masterful steps without stepping on anyone’s toes.

It is also the most coveted dances because of how it presses our will against the will of another. And when two wills meet in the heat of passion and combust into a thousand stars - it is the most elegant dance.

Mating leaves many astray. Man is an animal that craves companionship and tactility, not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. We need to interact with others, to exchange ideas, knowingness and fill the loneliness divide.

Several questions abound. Do men have a harder time at dating than women? Do women chase men away by putting them under the gun to marry them? Men and women have a different set of rules and very different perspectives.

Are men and women both too desperate to find love that they settle for anyone, which leaves them miserable and littering divorce courts?

I used to have a coworker who had an interesting set of rules. Kenneth is a 40-something rocker who wants 24 year old tax attorney, Sarah who just moved next door to him. Kenneth has been dating his girlfriend Beverly for 20 years.

They are of similar ages and backgrounds. They get along well together. They have built a history with each other and know each others likes and dislikes, etc. But as soon as Kenneth sees someone younger, he goes into his peacock strut, invites them to his latest show and gives them a guitar pick with his phone number on it (he had them specially made for this.)

He says Beverly is okay with it, they have an open relationship. He is an accomplished musician who has been playing the club circuit for years, but earning a living as a high-end art agent. Music is his calling card for the girls. He loves to play for them. When he strums his Gibson he is really strumming their heart strings.

Beverly probably doesn’t know the amount of girls Kenneth pursues when she is not around. She is just waiting for him to pop the question.

Men and women both speak foreign languages when it comes to love. Even though she may feel love, a woman wants to be reassured that she is loved. A man may not understand this because he feels that it’s obvious that he loves her because he is with her. He may have said, “I love you,” once and he thinks that should serve her for as long as they are together.

After a while, the man may realize that the woman is not like she was in the beginning and then start to resent her for wanting more of him. Some men will even use the language of gifts thinking that nothing says it better than diamonds.

When the woman receives the gift, she resigns the fact that he doesn’t say, “I love you,” everyday. She can live with it until the next time she feels that he doesn’t love her. For now, she can now show the world that he loves her by wearing her new jewelry - and to her - a symbol of love.

It’s not that she necessarily wants to hear him say those three words, she wants the world to know that he says those three words, even if it is ventriloquized by gifts.

Men learn early on to base their self-worth on dollar signs, but it doesn’t stop the fierce competition to find the right partner. Though it is sometimes impossible to merge with someone, I ask you to observe the animal kingdom. If you think we have it hard, you may thank your lucky stars that we are not them.

Next time we will examine love in the animal kingdom.

Good Tuesday Alexys,

Actually, don't certain doves mate for life ???

And the way penguins do it - every year choosing a different partner FOR THE WHOLE YEAR... well, that might work too, in a totally different way :)

confused 6/10/2008 4:51 PM

it took me a long time to realize that settling doesn't work..finally I did meet THE ONE..it pays to be patient and let it happen

for women the best chance for their genes to propagate is if they find someone who will commit to a relationship with them & the youngsters that they spend nine months each on their bio contribution.

for men the best odds for them to propagate their genes is if they do as many women as possible (they spend 5-10 minutes on their bio contribution to each youngster) and younger is better than older cuz the young gals are more fertile.

So there you have the gender gap. It's biology based on statistical odds.

I know very many women [and this has to do with increasing education henceforth self-reliance I think] who are not eager to marry if ever.

Increasingly, too, I have noticed a trend of men wanting to "capture" the woman into marriage.

I think we're going to see old stereotypes, although continually perpetuated through TV and insipid magazine articles, gradually shift toward equanimity due to the realization of self-reliance [suffrage, liberation, into the workforce, etc.] becoming the norm. We cannot forget that a woman's worth used to be tied up with the status of the man she married and it no longer *has* to be this way.

Women can now achieve an education, vote, hold property and work. This is naturally not news but with every decade and new generation of girls being bred, it's leaps and bounds from where it was just 100 years ago.

Time takes time but imagine it in another 100 years. Will the stereotypes be old myths by then or will we still be reading the entire "women are desperate and men need their freedom" propaganda?

Thanks for this post. A real thought-provoker.

Curiously,
Your EC friend,
Samsara

Annie,
Fairy penguins, found in the Southern Hemisphere prefer the warmer waters along the shores of Southern Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. They are the smallest of all the penguins. Some scientists recognize the Fairy penguin as one of two subspecies of Little Penguin; with the White-flippered penguin now being considered the second subspecies. Fairy penguins are also called, Little Blues because of the indigo-blue and slate-gray color of their feathers.

Most Fairy penguins mate for life with both males and females incubating the eggs and caring for the young.

Many species of penguin do form long-term relationships, but some species choose a new mate every year. Blue penguins are among those who form long-term relationships and their divorce rate is around 6% per year.

Many birds form long-term pair bonds that may last a lifetime, or only several years. No species is known to always mate for life; studies show that most monogamous species are more like humans, in that some pairings last only a short time, some for years, and a few for a lifetime.

Birds known to form long-term pair bonds that may last a lifetime include swans, geese, most hawks, eagles, falcons, most parrots, albatrosses, ravens, pigeons and doves, and more. Birds as a class contain more monogamous species than not, though some species switch mates more often than others. Most migratory songbirds find a new mate every year. Relatively few bird species are polygamous (males mate with many females), and just a few are polyandrous (females mate with many males).

Also like humans, though, even pair-bonded birds are known through genetic testing to occasionally "cheat" on their partners!

When a dove loses his/her partner, they mourn themselves to death.

quite different from your regular posts i thought. very interesting! :)

Alexys Fairfield 6/11/2008 8:42 AM

Confused,
I agree, there is a lot to be said about patience. Congrats on finding THE ONE. :D

Alexys Fairfield 6/11/2008 8:49 AM

Tix,
Thanks for that succinct biology lesson. I guess the bottom line is that men want what they want and women want what they want. Sometimes, never the twain shall meet.

Thanks for weighing in on the topic.

Alexys Fairfield 6/11/2008 9:03 AM

Samsara,
I have noticed too, that many men and women seem to shy away not only from marriage, but commitment. They wind up in a series of temporary relationships where they are not happy. Variety is not always the spice of life and that can lead to a false sense of happiness.

I would love to see the old stereotypes disappear and magazine articles reflect the truth, instead of perpetuating fiction and false hope. Maybe in another 100 years, the trend will shift in such a way, that we will read that "men are desperate and women need their freedom?"

Thanks for your historical, thoughtful and insightful comments.

Alexys Fairfield 6/11/2008 9:06 AM

Ajeya,
I like to mix it up at times just to see if you are paying attention. I am glad to say that you are. :D

UBERMOUTH 6/11/2008 12:27 PM

Great writing. Loved 'littering the divorce courts'.

I would dump Kenneth if I was her.

When one looks at the love between animals, like a male pheasant who will play decoy to the fox while his mate eats, it shames us humans sometimes.

Even a pet rat will die of love sickness if separated from its' owner , once they have bonded.

Alexys Fairfield 6/11/2008 5:36 PM

Uber,
Thanks.

I think that they are probably comfortable with each other and possibly too comfortable to move on even if they feel they don't have 100% commitment in each other.

I didn't know that about the pheasant - or the rat.

Thanks for contributing to this stream.

Jenaisle 6/11/2008 6:46 PM

A smooth post,I find it interesting. I have read somewhere that pheromones have vital roles in mating. The male senses the "smell" of a particular female, and pursues her - must be the pheromones. After the mating, they go their separate ways.

I'm glad we-humans-have brains to be able to nurture our relationships, before, during and "after" the mating process.

Thanks for sharing.

Alexys Fairfield 6/11/2008 8:53 PM

Jena,
I think love is mostly when chemistry meets destiny. Pheromones play a major role in attraction. Sometimes we are attracted to people and we don't know why. Mating is an interesting ritual in the animal and human kingdom. As civilized as humans are, there are still those who behave like animals. Humans have the ability to cultivate long lasting relationships.

Thanks for adding to this debate.

Liara Covert 6/12/2008 2:58 AM

I like the analogy of how human beings choose whether to attract and older, younger or same-age soul. This has nothing to do with perceived Earth years. If you're attracted to a younger soul, then this is a chance to learn and grow just as being attracted to other aged souls can be enriching. Its only when another soul chooses not to evolve that you may feel frustrated and drained without the result you thought you were seeking. You decide what works or what doesn't and why. This is based on how you see yourself.

SheR. 6/12/2008 4:47 AM

I tell you... the world's gone mad. Urbanisation has brought out the ugliness of our animal nature. Court, mate then go.

No one stays with another person for life anymore. Man or woman.

Man wants to have as many experiences as possible. Woman wants her share of fun.

I've seen women giving up on men because they no longer require a partner but deem men as a means to help them conceive a child.

Love.. cherish it. And for life.

Azure Islands Designs 6/12/2008 6:45 AM

Great post...well put!

Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 6/12/2008 1:32 PM

Billy,
I hear that sheep are willing participants, but that could only be a rumor?

See Woody Allen's, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask." It may give you some pointers. And do let me know if it helps. ;D

Alexys Fairfield 6/12/2008 1:34 PM

Liara,
Anything that elevates our consciousness to the next level is what we should all seek. Whether it's in a particular individual or situation, if we can learn something, then we have moved toward ultimate illumination.

Alexys Fairfield 6/12/2008 1:45 PM

Sher,
I'm from the old school. I believe in mating for life, but I am probably the minority. I don't have the time or inclination to keep spinning plates in the air - that's takes a lot of energy. And how long will it take to make one realize that they are spinning their wheels?

I agree, everyone wants to have fun with as many people as possible, but that "fun" can lead to a lot of emotional damage and lack of commitment skills.

"I've seen women giving up on men because they no longer require a partner but deem men as a means to help them conceive a child."

I agree.

You are right, love is to be cherished and honored for life. After all, the heart is a delicate muscle and matters of the heart are precious.

Alexys Fairfield 6/12/2008 1:46 PM

Azure,
Thanks for stopping by adding to this conversation.

Cheers!

Amber 6/13/2008 2:32 AM

Hi Everyone!

"I think love is mostly when chemistry meets destiny."

A compelling line from dear Alexys! This reminds me of the quote from a korean film My Sassy Girl - 'Fate is building a bridge of chance for someone you love.' I know that fate and destiny are different though at times I still mixed the two as these two concepts can be interchangeable. But somewhere in between, there is a difference. (A probable topic post our dear Alexys?)

Alexys Fairfield 6/13/2008 8:34 AM

Amber,
That's a beautiful quote from the film. Wow. I love it.

I have to think about possibly making it a topic. Hmmmm? Thanks for the idea and thanks for sharing that piece of beauty as well as your insight.

christopher panlaqui 6/13/2008 11:25 PM

Good day Alexys,

Destiny will always tell us if we are on the right path.... The moon and stars will always stare and smile if two individual are destine for each other...

Alexys Fairfield 6/14/2008 9:23 AM

Christopher,
And the universe will harmonize the melody of our Soul. :D

Thanks for dropping by and sharing.

Viqi French 6/14/2008 6:41 PM

Love those peacocks! I just wrote something about their mating ritual in a men's dating ebook for someone. ;-)

Very nice blog!

Alexys Fairfield 6/14/2008 9:02 PM

Viqi,
Aren't they splendid? Men are so much like peacocks too.

Thanks for stopping by and adding to this stream. Hope to see you again soon.
