Such beautiful words once again my sister,

I said these words to a friend recently:

To me there is nothing that explores the tender membrane between the sensual and the spiritual, like music.

May wild harmony and soft peace be yours my friend,

Love, M

Hi Alexys!

I cannot decide which ones to share so I'm posting quotes that I like so much on music.

"It is only by introducing the young to great literature, drama and music, and to the excitement of great science that we open to them the possibilities that lie within the human spirit -- enable them to see visions and dream dreams." Eric Anderson

"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." Berthold Auerbach

"Of all the earthly music, that which reaches farthest into heaven is the beating of a truly loving heart." Henry Ward Beecher

"Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life." Ludwig van Beethoven

"Every man's work, whether it be literature or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself." Samuel Butler

"To me, the greatest pleasure of writing is not what it's about, but the music the words make." Truman Capote

"Music is well said to be the speech of angels." Thomas Carlyle

Broadway Matron 8/27/2008 7:26 PM

"I hear the music in my head, that no one else can hear.
The drummer keeps a steady beat,
the guitarist throws a riff,
While the sax man blows it long and low -
it finally hits my feet.
A shuffle, then a bump, a swing,
as hips go side to side
And then the trumpet sidles in and I begin to glide"

Alexys Fairfield 8/27/2008 9:36 PM

Maithri,
You must have ESMP (Extra Sensory Music Perception.)

Beethoven said something similar, but not as eloquent as you.

"The tender membrane..."

Exceptional imagery. It is music to my ears.

Sending you the harmony of love my friend.

Alexys Fairfield 8/27/2008 9:38 PM

Amber,
Those are all lovely. Thank you for adding to this post.

Alexys Fairfield 8/27/2008 9:41 PM

Broadway Matron,
Resounding quote. I can definitely relate to the sound of all the instruments.

Harmony 8/28/2008 8:56 AM

Sorry, a wayward daughter here. I don't have a quote ABOUT music but a quote from music:
"I don't wanna work, I wanna bang on my drum all day." :-)

or then there is
"what a wonderful world..."

I could go on and on...the point being music goes beyond our thoughts and takes up residence in our memory.

Alexys Fairfield 8/28/2008 11:26 AM

Harmony,
I must say that I know both of those songs and I love them equally. I almost chose What A Wonderful World in the post that precedes this one.

I have so many songs in my memory that I can just press play.

Liara Covert 8/28/2008 3:56 PM

I do not have favorites, but this perspective is one that stands out for me among many:

“Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent.” -Victor Hugo

Alexys Fairfield 8/28/2008 4:25 PM

Liara,
I think that is quite expressive too - and from such a great writer.

Simon 8/30/2008 4:12 PM

Here's one I like:
"Music is the only language in which you cannot say a mean or sarcastic thing." - John Erskine.
I like your own quote best though - and the one from Liara.

Miruh 8/30/2008 7:02 PM

Here's a quote, by Ralph Waldo Emerson I used on my blog, just today.

"Music takes us out of the actual and whispers to us dim secrets that startle our wonder as to who we are, and for what, whence, and whereto."

Alexys Fairfield 8/30/2008 9:20 PM

Simon,
Ooh, that's a magnificent one. Thanks for sharing.

Alexys Fairfield 8/30/2008 9:22 PM

Miruh,
Breathtaking. Emerson was a master wordsmith.

Thanks for adding that.

Carol 9/01/2008 6:52 PM

"If you play a tune and a person don't tap their feet, don't play the tune." --Count Basie

I enjoyed your quotes!

Alexys Fairfield 9/01/2008 11:11 PM

Carol,
That's a great quote. Thanks for sharing it.

Max 9/02/2008 8:14 AM

Hey Alexys,

Great image, to start with!

Your music quote is just lovely...everytime I read it I can't help it but to smile (I know I had heard these words before, but I don't remember from which post)...

Richter's quote is also good.

"“I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights and you have yours. But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places. Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality.” ~H.A. Overstreet" - absolutely!

"“Music is the wine which inspires one to new generative processes, and I am Bacchus who presses out this glorious wine for mankind and makes them spiritually drunken.” ~Ludwig van Beethoven" - yes, yes, yes! I would have loved to have met Beethoven, despite his temper (but hey, he was a genius; and geniuses are entitled to some quirks lol)!

"Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music" - amen to that!

"What would you music quote be?" - Music is the beverage of soul: it quenches its thirst for transcendence (by Max Coutinho).

Lady A, thanks for delighting us with this melodic post *bowing*!
Musical Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 9/02/2008 4:25 PM

Hi Max,
Thanks. I love that image too.

"Your music quote is just lovely...everytime I read it I can't help it but to smile (I know I had heard these words before, but I don't remember from which post)..."

Aw shucks, thanks.

"I would have loved to have met Beethoven, despite his temper (but hey, he was a genius; and geniuses are entitled to some quirks lol)!"

I have always had a fondness for Mozart.

Maybe Beethoven had a temper because he was deaf? He also never married. Compound that to his inability to hear his beautiful music. His fellow musicians had him turn to the audience because he couldn't hear them applauding. He once threw a plate of food at a waiter's head because he wasn't happy with the service. LOL. He WAS a passionate artist. If he were Greek, they would have yelled, "Opa," and started dancing. ;D

He described the piano as "the god of all instruments" and wrote more for piano than for any other instrument.

"Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music" - amen to that!"

I think that resonates in both of our Souls. (((smiles)))

"Music is the beverage of soul: it quenches its thirst for transcendence (by Max Coutinho)."

Love it. Love it Love it!

Thanks for adding your symphony to this post.

Mellifluous Cheers!

Max 9/03/2008 9:09 AM

Alexys,

"Thanks. I love that image too." - don't mention it :D!

"Aw shucks, thanks." - you are extremely welcome (both meanings) *bowing*!

"I have always had a fondness for Mozart." - LOL Ah, Mozart was funny! The way he laughed and his sense of humour: wow!

"Maybe Beethoven had a temper because he was deaf? He also never married." - he had already a bad temper before he became deaf (now it is said that perhaps he was bi-polar), but after losing his hearing he became worse. He was deeply in love with his "Immortal Beloved" whose identity was unknown and for some reason they didn't stay together (perhaps because she was either married or belonged to the Aristocracy - he fancied impossible love stories lol)...but if it were me I wouldn't want to marry Beethoven...because with his temper I would have to see myself obliged to kick his butt and it wouldn't be nice *nodding*...

"Compound that to his inability to hear his beautiful music. His fellow musicians had him turn to the audience because he couldn't hear them applauding." - it was amazing how he could compose magnificent music despite his being deaf! His fellow musicians were kind...

"He once threw a plate of food at a waiter's head because he wasn't happy with the service. LOL. He WAS a passionate artist. If he were Greek, they would have yelled, "Opa," and started dancing. ;D" - LOL man!!! LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL true LOL LOL LOL LOL ah you kill me, girl!

"He described the piano as "the god of all instruments" and wrote more for piano than for any other instrument." - I also like the piano compositions, gorgeous!! Although I also appreciate the violin and the cello a lot!

"I think that resonates in both of our Souls. (((smiles)))" - *huge smile* indeed it does, darling *High 5*!

"Love it. Love it Love it!" - thank you so much *throwing roses*!

"Thanks for adding your symphony to this post." - girl, anything for you :D!

Super mellifluous Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 9/03/2008 11:58 AM

Max,

"LOL Ah, Mozart was funny! The way he laughed and his sense of humour: wow!"

He was funny wasn't he? Did you see the film Amadeus? Stellar acting and excellent monologues.

"...he had already a bad temper before he became deaf (now it is said that perhaps he was bi-polar), but after losing his hearing he became worse."

I didn't hear that. (Get it?) Ha ha. Seriously, I did not hear that he was bi-polar. It would make sense.

"He was deeply in love with his "Immortal Beloved" whose identity was unknown and for some reason they didn't stay together (perhaps because she was either married or belonged to the Aristocracy - he fancied impossible love stories lol)"

I DID hear this. Perhaps he loved women that were out of bounds, so they could be together and then go their separate ways. He had an incessant urge to create life through music. I am not sure he that wanted the permanence of a relationship because of his temper. He may have been addicted to the chase of the uncatchable? (Hypothesizing?)

"...but if it were me I wouldn't want to marry Beethoven...because with his temper I would have to see myself obliged to kick his butt and it wouldn't be nice."

ROFL. ROFL. Falling off chair. Picking self up. Trying not to fall again. ROFL. You are too funny.

"...it was amazing how he could compose magnificent music despite his being deaf!"

It IS amazing. He was so adept at it that he didn't need to hear it. The vibration of the notes told him all he needed, but it was still frustrating not to hear the appreciation of the audience until he turned around. Did you see the film Immortal Beloved? (I didn't like it as much as Amadeus.)

Beethoven completed nine symphonies before his death. Since then, some composers have been superstitious about reaching this total, and a surprising number have in fact failed to make it to number ten.

I would have loved dining with Beethoven - just to see him in his finest plate-throwing action. LOL.

"I also like the piano compositions, gorgeous!! Although I also appreciate the violin and the cello a lot!"

Hear! Hear! ;D

"*High 5*!"

Returning High 5!

Oh, what lovely roses. Simply marvelous! Thanks.

Ode to Joy Cheers

Max 9/04/2008 8:13 AM

Hey Alexys,

"He was funny wasn't he? Did you see the film Amadeus? Stellar acting and excellent monologues." - He was extremely funny! Oh yeah, I watched Amadeus: superb movie!! I couldn't agree more...and the wardrobe was of excellent quality too! The whole movie was good...

"I didn't hear that. (Get it?) Ha ha. Seriously, I did not hear that he was bi-polar. It would make sense." - ROFL yeah, I get it LOL LOL! Yes, that is what they say...but who knows if it is true - this conclusion was reached after an analysis done to his will.

"I DID hear this. Perhaps he loved women that were out of bounds, so they could be together and then go their separate ways." - perhaps he did...you know there are men like that...*nodding*...and women too!

"He had an incessant urge to create life through music. I am not sure he that wanted the permanence of a relationship because of his temper. He may have been addicted to the chase of the uncatchable? (Hypothesizing?)" - girl, you may very well be right! Some people like to chase what is off limits (I once heard a young lady saying that she loved married man; if she knew that a man was married/engaged she would chase that man...she didn't want single men...go figure *nodding*)...

"ROFL. ROFL. Falling off chair. Picking self up. Trying not to fall again. ROFL. You are too funny." - LOL LOL LOL girl, just don't hurt yourself LOL. Me, funny? How about you!? ;)

"It IS amazing. He was so adept at it that he didn't need to hear it. The vibration of the notes told him all he needed, but it was still frustrating not to hear the appreciation of the audience until he turned around." - I totally hear you! (ok, this came out wrong...lol)

"Did you see the film Immortal Beloved? (I didn't like it as much as Amadeus.)" - I did, I did! The movie per se was not as good as Amadeus, but the story was splendid! And for some reason I sympathised with Beethoven...

"Beethoven completed nine symphonies before his death." - yes, I read he did...

"Since then, some composers have been superstitious about reaching this total, and a surprising number have in fact failed to make it to number ten." - really? Now this I didn't know...

"I would have loved dining with Beethoven - just to see him in his finest plate-throwing action. LOL." - LOL LOL "Opa!" LOL LOL! You know I would join you lol....

"Hear! Hear! ;D" - LOL ;D

"Oh, what lovely roses. Simply marvelous! Thanks." - I thought you would like them :D! You are welcome, Lady A *bowing*!

Für Elise Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 9/04/2008 12:15 PM

Max,

"...you know there are men like that...*nodding*...and women too!"

I know. Bad karma people. LOL.

"girl, you may very well be right! Some people like to chase what is off limits (I once heard a young lady saying that she loved married man; if she knew that a man was married/engaged she would chase that man...she didn't want single men...go figure *nodding*)..."

Pathetic.

"I totally hear you! (ok, this came out wrong...lol)"

Ha ha ha.

"[Immortal Beloved?] The movie per se was not as good as Amadeus, but the story was splendid! And for some reason I sympathised with Beethoven..."

I know. I sensed pain, heartache, frustration, sadness. Gary Oldman was excellent as he was in Sid and Nancy!

"I would have loved dining with Beethoven - just to see him in his finest plate-throwing action. LOL." - LOL LOL "Opa!" LOL LOL! You know I would join you lol...."

At least we would have a good time. Opa!

Thanks for the laughter and love.

Symphony No.5 In C Minor Cheers!

Max 9/05/2008 7:38 AM

Alexys,

"I know. Bad karma people. LOL." - LOL LOL absolutely!

"Pathetic." - completely! And what a loser too!

"I know. I sensed pain, heartache, frustration, sadness. Gary Oldman was excellent as he was in Sid and Nancy!" - I love it when movies transmit us this type of emotions. Gary Oldman is an excellent actor; I love all his movies. Unfortunately I didn't watch "Sid and Nancy" but I read its synopsis and it sounds like an interesting movie. Did you like it?

"At least we would have a good time. Opa!" - LOL LOL yes, we would've LOL...*Max imagining the whole scene*....smashing! lol

"Thanks for the laughter and love." - my pleasure, darling! I am still laughing myself.... ;D

Moonlight Sonata Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 9/05/2008 10:10 AM

Max,

"I love it when movies transmit us this type of emotions."

That's the best type of film when we get involved with the characters.

"Gary Oldman is an excellent actor; I love all his movies. Unfortunately I didn't watch "Sid and Nancy"...Did you like it?"

Yes, a very interesting movie because the two leads were interesting in real life. Nancy had a strange power over Sid and it is presumed that he killed her. No one knows for sure, but it is definitely an interesting character study.

"Max imagining the whole scene*....smashing! lol"

Ha ha. "Smashing!" Touché!

"I am still laughing myself."

Me too.

Minuet in G Major Cheers!

Max 9/05/2008 10:32 AM

Alexys,

"Yes, a very interesting movie because the two leads were interesting in real life. Nancy had a strange power over Sid and it is presumed that he killed her. No one knows for sure, but it is definitely an interesting character study." - I see what you mean...I read in wikipedia that the Cobain couple is often compared to to Sid and Nancy; do you think that Courtney Love had that much influence in Kurt's life? Although she couldn't stop him from taking his own life...

"Ha ha. "Smashing!" Touché!" - lol lol lol....*bowing*!

Passionata Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 9/05/2008 12:20 PM

Max,
Courtney Love also played in Sid and Nancy. I don't think Courtney had that much influence over Kurt's life, but then again, I didn't live with them. I think she wants control over his estate (understandably) and the Nirvana catalogue, but the other members want their fair share too. (Merchandising, licensing, film rights, music rights, etc.) Who really knows?

Real Nirvana Cheers!

Max 9/08/2008 8:19 AM

Hey Alexys,

I see what you mean (about Courtney Love)...and I agree that only the couple knows what really went down...
Ah, there is a Nirvana estate battle going on? Interesting...
Thanks for having enlightened me, darling :D!

Real Nirvana cheers

Alexys Fairfield 9/08/2008 9:03 AM

Max,
Anytime. :D

May The Light Be With You Cheers!
