An Odyssey of Love, Enlightenment and Finding the Fountain of You.

What's Your Favorite Love Song?

Music is an important aspect in my life. There isn't a day that goes by when I don’t hear it. It’s as important as food and water. If I ever didn’t hear it, my heart would starve.

I take it so serious that I don’t like to to miss any part of the song. If someone talks over a song, I’ll turn it off until a time where I can hear the whole thing uninterrupted.

I like songs where I just melt into them. And I will listen and listen and listen and listen. I try to put myself in the place of the songwriter first. How they must have felt when they wrote the song? What happened to make them write it?

Then I think of how I would sing it, (if I sang), where I would put the emphasis for the best emotional effect, how I would arrange it, produce it, and how other singers would sing it, etc.

There is a whole production in my head. At one point in my life, I considered going into the music business, as a recording engineer/producer, but like I have said so many times, my hands were guided to this keyboard to tap out a melody in words.

I can’t say enough about a good love song. One that makes you stop whatever you’re doing and let the melody and lyrics take you to another place.

Music transports us from here to there. We can recall specific instances in our lives with music - a graduation, prom, wedding, etc. When we are depressed, we don’t want to hear happy songs to get us out of it, we would rather hear sad songs just to know that someone else has been through what we are going through.

When we are happy, music can only make us happier. Our Soul relates to the sound we hear when we are in tune with ourselves. That’s the key to music, to be in tune with our spirit.

My musical taste spans years and genres. When my grandmother died, my mother inherited her record collection and she continually played it throughout my childhood. I heard Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and more. Thus, my musical grasp extends beyond my years.

I have too many favorites to list, but one song that has always been a favorite is, The Rose sung by Bette Midler. It has all the elements of an exquisite song, arrangement, vocals, melody, lyrics, and the freeze factor. (where it freezes you in your tracks.)

To me, the song is about finding our true purpose and blossoming into our own being. It is overcoming the fear of living and learning to love all that we are. It is the kind of love song that goes beyond a romantic love song. It dives right into the fabric of the Soul with reason, rhyme and tender hooks that embed themselves under our skin.

We search to find something outside of ourselves when it has always been there staring at us. After searching in the darkness, we find that we are the light at the end of the tunnel. We really are.

For those of you still searching, this song is for you. For those of you who have found yourself, this song is for you. For those who don’t know where to look, this song is for you. For those who have always known, this song is for you. You are a love song.

The Rose

Some say love, it is a river
that drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
that leaves your Soul to bleed

Some say love, it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
and you it's only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
who cannot seem to give
and the Soul afraid of dying
that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed
that with the sun's love
in the spring
becomes the rose

If you could put your life into a song, what would it be? If you opened your heart, what love song would be in it? Play me your tune.

Hi Alexys!
I love it when you always share something about yourself.

Music is truly the language of our soul. I can relate to many love songs but for now the song that I can associate with my Soul's journey is Colbie Calliat's "Circles."

I was running in circles
was only a matter of time
before I found myself drowning in troubled lies
was starring back at what I´d seen for a long, long time
how did I break it?
how did I clear my mind?

this feeling just gets better all the time
so beautiful in front of me that I can´t believe my eyes
I know it from move ahead time is one my side
I´m free from the circle
there´ll be no regrets this time

I was hiding in places I knew nobody could find
until I found myself spinning in rewind
was starring back at what I´d seen for a long, long time
I had to break it
I had to clear my mind

this feeling just gets better all the time
so beautiful in front of me that I can´t believe my eyes
I know it from move ahead time is one my side
I´m free from the circle
there´ll be no regrets this time

Hard times that I like to forget about
so much I held inside
god let it out
it took a while to find it
but now I´m here and I can´t deny it

this feeling just gets better all the time
so beautiful in front of me that I can´t believe my eyes
I know it from move ahead time is one my side
I´m free from the circle
there´ll be no regrets this time

I know, I'm out of the circle but life can really be in circles or better called cycles. At least, I know I was just trapped in my own labyrinth. I just have to move on and be apply what I have learned.

Robert,
Excellent choice. Elvis also does an awesome cover of that song.

Alexys Fairfield 8/26/2008 12:52 AM

Hi Amber,
It truly is the language of Soul. It moves us in ways unlike anything else.

That's a very introspective song. She has a good voice, similar to Sheryl Crowe. I also like Bubbly.

As I evolve to move beyond judgment and comparison, I sense all love songs are my favorites. To perceive love in any form brings a being closer to the purest form of love there is.

"If you could put your life into a song, what would it be?"

Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan

"If you opened your heart, what love song would be in it?"

Oh God by Annie Lennox

Hey Alexys,

Beautiful article, darling; I must bow to you *bowing*!

Music is an important part of my life too. I don't seem to know how to live without it: I listen to it when I am working, cleaning, cooking, dressing, strolling, riding around town in a car; conversing etc, etc...

"There is a whole production in my head" - lol I know how you feel! I used to do that a long time ago (before bad music teachers drained me *nodding*)...after that I just decided to enjoy the art of others.

You are right, one can't define what is THE love song; but there is one (among a few) that simply blows me away: "Burn" by Usher. I know, it is a kind of sad love song however it just blows me away, I don't know why. And it is funny cause it does not transmit me saddness, au contraire; it gives me a sense of floating (try to analyse that lol).

Now, if we talk about "Love/sensual" song I must refer to Prince!!! Man, I love that artist (no pun intended lol)! I can detect a song by Prince kms away, and I will freeze for sure!!

I have heard that people, when depressed, do not listen to happy songs...they rather listen to sad songs (what a paradox)! When I'm sad I listen to classical music (no lyrics, just the melody: perfect!)...
Girl, when I am happy (which happens quite often LOL) I listen to everything that can make me dance!!! You catch me dancing, you know that I am super happy lol :)!

Ella Fitz, Sara Vaughn, Nina Simone, Billie, Miles Davies, brother Duke, the Bird....I grew up listening to those...such classics!! Good music whose quality has never ever been matched again.

Thank you for "The Rose" it is beautiful!! :D

"If you could put your life into a song, what would it be?" - "The A train" by Duke E.

"If you opened your heart, what love song would be in it?" - this is a hard one...let me see..."Una furtiva lagrima" by Mario Lanza

"Play me your tune" -

Una furtiva lagrima (one furtive tear)
Negli occhi suoi spuntò (in her eyes appeared)
Quelle festose giovani invidiar sembrò...(she seemed to envy those joyous young girls)
Che più cercando io vo? Che più cercando io vo? (what else do I need to seek?)
M'ama, lo vedo (she loves me, I can see it)
Un solo istante i palpiti del suo bel cor sentir! (for a brief moment I can feel the heartbeat of her generous heart)
I miei sospir confondere per poco con suoi sospir! (and my breath merges in her breath)
I palpiti, i palpiti sentir (the heartbeats, the heartbeats)
Confondere i miei con suoi sospir (the merge of our breath)
(one can die, one can die out of love!)

Fantastic, Lady A *bowing*!

Furtiva Lagrima cheers

Alexys Fairfield 8/26/2008 1:00 PM

Suplado,
That's a profound song. Too bad Steve Perry is no longer with the band. His voice blows me away, especially on Wheel In The Sky, Faithfully and Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'.

Alexys Fairfield 8/26/2008 1:04 PM

Alex,
You have just mentioned two of my most favorites, Steely Dan And Annie Lennox.

Great choices.
Steely Dan's Bodhisattva, Black Cow, Do It Again, Show Biz Kids are among my faves.

ANY AND EVERYTHING by Annie, even if she sang the phone book!

Alexys Fairfield 8/26/2008 1:05 PM

Liara,
That's true too, but some love songs bring one closer to the source than others, don't you think?

Alexys Fairfield 8/26/2008 1:59 PM

Max,
Thanks. You don't have to bow though. A curtsy will suffice. ;D

Music is my life's soundtrack. Even when it is not playing on a stereo, it plays inside.

"I used to do that a long time ago (before bad music teachers drained me *nodding*)...after that I just decided to enjoy the art of others."

Don't you despise when teachers ruin the subject by bad teaching and too much theory? They can't deprive us of good music. We will seek. We will find. We will enjoy. :D

"Burn" by Usher. I know, it is a kind of sad love song however it just blows me away, I don't know why. And it is funny cause it does not transmit me saddness, au contraire; it gives me a sense of floating (try to analyse that lol)."

That's a great song. I think Usher shows that he has reached a level of maturity in that song (and that whole album.) It was one of the most honest albums I have heard from him. Co-written by JD (of course.) I just love Confessions Part II. A frank look into the consequences of his actions. Have you heard, Best Thing (off of the Here I Stand album?) Awesome song. Also Lovers & Friends.

"Now, if we talk about "Love/sensual" song I must refer to Prince!!! Man, I love that artist (no pun intended lol)! I can detect a song by Prince kms away, and I will freeze for sure!!"

Little Red Corvette, Sing O' The Times, When Doves Cry, Nothing Compares 2 U, Alphabet Street, Purple Rain, Kiss (Tom Jones version), I Wanna Be Your Lover, Diamonds & Pearls.

"When I'm sad I listen to classical music (no lyrics, just the melody: perfect!)..."

They have their own magic.

"Girl, when I am happy (which happens quite often LOL) I listen to everything that can make me dance!!! You catch me dancing, you know that I am super happy lol :)!"

I know you are dancing right now. I can see you. You go girl!

"Ella Fitz...., Good music whose quality has never ever been matched again."

Very true.

"Thank you for "The Rose" it is beautiful!! :D"

So many songs are in my head at any given time. I managed to pull that one out. It is beautiful.

"If you could put your life into a song, what would it be?" - "The A train" by Duke E."

Excellent choice. I like Satin Doll, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), I Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues (The Pointer Sisters version)......

"Una furtiva lagrima" by Mario Lanza"

Another exceptional choice my dear.

Thanks for that translation. Exquisite!

You are a beautiful opera.

Music, Music, Music Cheers!

UBERMOUTH 8/26/2008 9:27 PM

Oh, fabulous post! Thanks for the lyrics- I never knew them all.

Great song.

Like you, my musical tastes span many decades, and like you, music is so very important to me( as is dancing).

What song would be my love song???

Tears In Heaven

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

I'll find my way
Through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven.

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

One of the most touching songs I have ever heard.

Alexys Fairfield 8/27/2008 12:55 AM

Uber,
Fine choice. That song is Eric Clapton's best. It makes me want to cry each time I hear it, especially knowing the story behind it. I am getting sad just thinking about it. Absolutely beautiful composition.

It is truly touching and a grand tribute to his lost son.

Max 8/27/2008 10:36 AM

Alexys,

"Thanks." - you are welcome :D!

"Music is my life's soundtrack. Even when it is not playing on a stereo, it plays inside." - gorgeous!!

"Don't you despise when teachers ruin the subject by bad teaching and too much theory? They can't deprive us of good music. We will seek. We will find. We will enjoy. :D" - I totally despise it *nodding*! Absolutely, girl *High 5*!

"That's a great song. Also Lovers & Friends." - I agree that in that album Usher reached a level of maturity; the songs were deep, profound and incisive to the soul! JD is an artist indeed! Confessions Part II is just fabulous!!! "You remind me of a girl" is also great; "Got it bad" amazing...*sigh* I could go on and on lol! No, I haven't heard that one but I am going to look for it; thanks :D!

"Little Red Corvette, Sing O' The Times, When Doves Cry, Nothing Compares 2 U, Alphabet Street, Purple Rain, Kiss (Tom Jones version), I Wanna Be Your Lover, Diamonds & Pearls." - yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes (Kiss, I prefer Prince's version), yes, yes! And I would add Continental, Love you to the 9's, God created woman, Papa, Dark, Come, Nikki, Beautiful ones....oh so many delicious songs lol.

"They have their own magic." - indeed...

"I know you are dancing right now. I can see you. You go girl!" - *shaking by behind* you little psychic LOL ;D!

"So many songs are in my head at any given time. I managed to pull that one out. It is beautiful." - I know what you mean! Us, music lovers have a hard time naming on song only...it seems like we love them all lol.

"Excellent choice. I like Satin Doll, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), I Ain't Got Nothin' But The Blues (The Pointer Sisters version)......" - Thank you! Excellent choices!! And how about Sophisticated Lady? And Indigo?

"Another exceptional choice my dear." - thanks *bowing*!

"Thanks for that translation. Exquisite!" - anything for you :D!

"You are a beautiful opera." - why, thank you! You are so sweet :D!

Melody Cheers

Max,

"I agree that in that album Usher reached a level of maturity; the songs were deep, profound and incisive to the soul! JD is an artist indeed! Confessions Part II is just fabulous!!! "You remind me of a girl" is also great; "Got it bad" amazing..."

I like hearing when an artist matures. The music is more reflective and has a longer shelf life to me, where I can play it in ten years and still feel something. (as opposed to pop when you play it years later and say, "Why did I ever buy this?)

I must have been in a hurry yesterday. It is not 'Sing O' The Times' like I wrote, it is Sign O' The Times. LOL

"(Kiss, I prefer Prince's version), yes, yes! And I would add Continental, Love you to the 9's, God created woman, Papa, Dark, Come, Nikki, Beautiful ones....oh so many delicious songs lol."

It is not that I don't like Prince's version. They are the same, yet different. I like the coquettishness of Prince and the demand of Tom. Prince is asking you. Tom is telling you.

"I know what you mean! Us, music lovers have a hard time naming on song only...it seems like we love them all lol."

True.

"And how about Sophisticated Lady? And Indigo?"

That goes without saying.

Sweet Harmony Cheers!

Alexys,

"I like hearing when an artist matures. The music is more reflective and has a longer shelf life to me, where I can play it in ten years and still feel something. (as opposed to pop when you play it years later and say, "Why did I ever buy this?)" - I agree with you 100%! LOL LOL I have some CDs, I bought let's say 10 years ago, and when I lay my eyes on them and go like "Was I drunk when I bought this or what?" (and I don't even drink)! Have you ever heard about the "Bros"?

"I must have been in a hurry yesterday. It is not 'Sing O' The Times' like I wrote, it is Sign O' The Times. LOL" - LOL Prince was a little hurt, but he's ok now lol....

"It is not that I don't like Prince's version. They are the same, yet different. I like the coquettishness of Prince and the demand of Tom. Prince is asking you. Tom is telling you." - nice reading into it! I never saw it that way....

So many - easy to write an autobiography with songs. I associate people with songs - all the important people in my life have had a song attached to them. My husband is "Funny Valentine"

Yeah - When WIll I Be Famous. I just pulled it up. Definitely an earmark of the 80's.

Don't tell me that you were under their spell?

Bros Cheers.

Alexys Fairfield 8/27/2008 5:06 PM

Broadway Matron,
All excellent choices with a story each their own. I love them all.

It's funny how we associate people with songs.

Maithri 8/27/2008 5:33 PM

Dear Alexys,

You sing to my heart.

I have always loved the rose. Loved hearing it. Loved singing it. Loved feeling it...

There are so many songs I love... i couldnt just pick one...

In fact there are songs which describe every mood and every aspect of our personalities...

Heres one I love... Have you heard a song called 'Arianne' by Aaron Neville - ive been listenin to it non stop for a few days now... just posted it on my blog actually ;)

Thank you for sharing your fragrant words with the world,

Your soul is a symphony.

My love to you, M

Alexys Fairfield 8/27/2008 7:21 PM

Maithri,
You are so lovely darling.

It was so hard to choose just one. To you, I share this rose. You can sing it to me any time. Your words are a melody.

Aaron Neville is a fine singer indeed. That song is like poetry set to music. It is beautiful, vibrant, ethereal, sweet - reminds me a bit of Al Jarreau, another fave.

Much love and music to you.

amber 8/28/2008 1:29 AM

I knew Colbie sounded like another singer. You're right. Her voice has a semblance with Sheryl Crow.

Max 8/28/2008 9:38 AM

Alexys,

This may come as a shock, but...yes, I was under the Bros spell (I even dressed like them LOL LOL so embarrassing)! I knew all their songs and lyrics...*nodding*.

Nowadays, when I look at their album kept for future reference...I wonder where my senses had gone lol!

Bros Cheers

Alexys Fairfield 8/28/2008 11:19 AM

Amber,
After a while they all start to sound similar, especially if they are in the same genre.

Alexys Fairfield 8/28/2008 11:22 AM

Max,
ROFL. My brother used to dress like Michael Jackson (one glove) in his 80's period. It was the funniest thing back then. Now when I want to embarrass him, I'll bring it up.

Sis & Bros Cheers.

Max 8/28/2008 11:34 AM

Alexys,

LOL LOL Michael Jackson? LOL LOL LOL LOL...ok, we all have our quirks!

Moon walk Cheers

Yes, we do.

Quirky Cheers.
