"Man is more than his environment. It is from the innate quality of the Spirit in him, his inner storehouse, that he draws those ideas, his intuitions, which unify his perceptions of the external world instantaneously with a value which is qualitative and not quantitative, and which he embodies in the works of his culture - those achievements which belong not only to one particular time but to all times, and mark the path of his upward progress."

Wow that is so deep, I didn't quite get it. So many big words in a row didn't help either...and the guy does look like terrorist and all.

The will of the human spirit to rise up and overcome always amazes me.
I once read a quote by a prisoner who said something along the lines of.. they can imprison your body but not your mind, that is free to go wherever it wants to go beyond these walls.

Uber,
This guy represents someone who does not embody his outer environment - only his inner one. When the world is cold, we can still have love in our heart. He wants you to know that wherever you are in the world, you can embody love. :D

Uber,
The prisoner is right. And when one realizes that no one can take away one's Soul and mind, it can roam free.

I agree man is far more than his environment. I would even suggest human identity is unrelated to job, gender, status or anything related to the physical plane.

Its intriguing how this quote recognizes the quality of spirit yet focuses on "upward progress" as if to imply that is the only desirable kind.Such a hierarchical vision is almost certainly grounded in perceptions of power in the physical world. Another way to perceive progress, is to sense it is infinite and comprises many more directions than the human mind is ready or willing to comprehend. The ego does not begin to grasp the truth of existence.

Liara,
That's a very good point. God is not vertical, it is all around and the depth is more than height.

Thanks for peeling the skin on this one.

Hi Alexys!

This quote reminds me of the poem "Rhodora." Despite its murky and dark environment, the goodness and beauty of the flower remained intact. We are all similar to that precious bloom it is just how we live our lives in beauty and goodness no matter how stark the environment or situation we are in.

"Man is more than his environment." I love it. That's enough to get me through the day. :-)

That phrase: "Man is more that his environment" made me think of the fundamental theories of deviant behavior. I have studied some psychology and sociology and I'm always amazed at the complicated theories required to explain the small wonder that we know as imagination and initiative.

People may be influenced by their environment, but they are not held back by it. The only thing that holds us back is our own imagination. We can rise above everything around us, even if our surroundings are trying to pull us downward.

The idea of achievement is a very important factor. To make 'upward progress' as the quote mentions we must make an active effort, it isn't something that happens by itself.

The quote is very inspirational.

Thank you for sharing it,

Hi Amber,
That's a nice poem and it is evident of life. No matter what happens to us, our Soul is still intact.

Jacqueline,
Noting like the right fuel to get us through our day. Have a great one!

Nathan,
Not enough credit is given to imagination and freedom of thought. In fact, it is often clouded in scientific facts and theories. Once we shake loose our intellect and let the spirit flow throw us, we can ride the wave of imagination, wonder and awe-inspiration.
