Anthony De Mello And God

Reading further into Anthony De Mello’s book Awareness, there is a passage about God that resonates and speaks to not only the theological world, but the world at large.
“The fact is that you are surrounded by God and you don’t see God, because you “know” about God. The final barrier to the vision of God is your concept. You miss God because you think you know. That’s the terrible thing about religion. That’s what the gospels were saying, that religious people “knew,” so they got rid of Jesus. The highest knowledge of God is to know God is unknowable.
There is far too much God talk; the world is sick of it. There is too little awareness, too little love, too little happiness, but let's not use those words either. There’s too little dropping of illusions, dropping of errors, dropping of attachments and cruelty, too little awareness. That’s what the whole world is suffering from, not from a lack of religion. Religion is supposed to be about a lack of awareness.
The one who knows, does not say; the one who says, does not know. All revelations, however divine, are never any more than a finger pointing at the moon. When the sage points to the moon, all the idiots see is the finger.”
I agree with most of this passage and applaud the boldness of the author, however I don’t think God is unknowable. I understand what he means, but God IS and to me that is a form of knowingness. If I didn’t know God, I wouldn’t know life.
Just because we read something in print, see it on television or hear someone say it doesn’t mean it is true. I think we have to find our own truth and it speaks to us in tones that we understand.
What do you think? Does anything in this passage standout for you; rub you the right way or wrong way?
Speak to me.

Human beings are indeed their own barriers to whatever they refuse to see and feel. We have selective perception that gradualy opens with awareness as we recall the reasons we came here to learn. I love your references to DeMello. He encourages every human being to trust and have faith in what they already sense inside. Whenever a person chooses he or she can let go of fear and permit awareness to flow freely.
Hi Alexys,
Re:"The highest knowledge of God is to know God is unknowable."
I agree that you cannot "know" God in a cognitive sense, a mental perception. We can know God through awareness, through insight and through our knowingness which is our innate wisdom. Perhaps this is what Mr DeMello is referring to as "unknowable?"
I don't get,"Religion is supposed to be about a lack of awareness." Do you?
Liara,
The human consciousness is one that needs constant reminding or it will slip into darkness. As awareness is understood, we begin to remember our roles as human beings.
De Mello is definitely an advocate for overcoming the human consciousness and expanding to God consciousness.
Hi Miruh,
I know what you mean and I like your explanation. We can't try to perceive God because our perception is a mental construct and God is beyond the mental plane.
"Religion is supposed to be about a lack of awareness."
Perhaps it means that since religion is based on doctrine and relies on interpretation, the more doctrine we learn, the less awareness we have because we are laden with inconsistencies. (in a nutshell) Doctrine is a hint, not a description, we are not encouraged to find the spark that makes us shine. When we become aware of our light, we can give it to others without words.
A little "knowledge" is a dangerous thing.
In my first economics class in college, the professor drew a smallish circle on the board. He said the inside of the circle was what we knew (or thought we knew) and the perimeter was what we knew we didn't know. At the end of the semester, the circle should be much larger. In other words, our body of knowledge would have increased, but so would our awareness of just how much was out there that we did not comprehend...yet.
"Religion is supposed to be about lack of awareness" Huh? This right after "there is too little awareness" Maybe I'm thick and don't understand
I agree with Mr. De Mello in that people often limit themselves through their perception. For example people who believe that God burns people forever in hellfire are limiting themselves with this belief.
But like you I don't think that God is unknowable. I think that it is probably difficult to figure out, but not impossible.
I don't think that "religion is supposed to be about lack of awareness," its supposed to be about expanded awareness, the ability to see what others don't see and know what others don't know.
As always, I've discovered that while it can be good to read about other's ideas, sometimes you need a filter. Like you said, don't assume that something is correct just because its in print.
NathanKP - Imagination Manifesto
Alexys, your explanation of Mr De Mello's quote, "Religion is supposed to be about a lack of awareness,"
makes sense to me. That was certainly a confusing statement in the context.
Thanks for clarifying, you must have really gotten into his head to come up with this!
Cheers,
Miruh
It is often assumed the soul is born in human form as a way to leave the abyss of its origin for a period. It is also assumed each soul returns to that place of infinity with new knowledge after different existences. The idea of "slipping back into darkness" is perhaps akin to an urge to reconnect with what is unseen. It does not have to be negative. God consciousness is a connection to the invisible reinforced by faith.
KentuckyGal,
I like your professor's circle method. Wonderful. It is a very good visual tool for learning. And see you still remember it today which means your knowledge probably has expanded since college. Thanks for sharing your inner circle with us. :D
Broadway Matron,
I think what he may be saying is that all religion teaches doctrine which ironically is a lack of personal awareness - how we relate to the world in general. It is a radical concept to think that we can expand our knowledge without following one formula, but we really can by being in tune with ourselves. Stay tuned.
Hi Nathan,
I know that there are a large amount of people who are afraid of God and thus misinterpret the understanding of God.
Religion should be about expanding our awareness, but unfortunately it has become tainted by individuals who think that their ideals should be implemented as the only way to God. There are many paths to enlightenment.
We learn by experience.
Hi Miruh,
I found it a bit confounding too, then I readdressed it. It is only my interpretation. That's the beauty of unfolding - watching flowers bloom.
Cheers.
Liara,
I agree that God consciousness is a connection not only to the invisible, but to the visible. I see a lot of tangible experiences connected to God consciousness with my inner eyes and outer eyes. Thanks for that addition.
Wow! Did that ever speak to me.
Loved the line about the sage pointing a fingerat the moon, and the idiots only see the finger.
Hi Uber,
I loved that one too. Isn't it typical of lunacy?
Hi Alexys,
This is a wonderful and profound post.
I too agree with you 100%. If God was unknowable then how is it that I know him? And he me?
I do think that to know and understand God completely is an unobtainable thing while we are stuck here on this mortal plain.
I also think that it is a disgrace what has been done to faith through organized religion.
Why is it so hard for so many to understand that religion is man made.
Religion is not God. I walk with God everyday. And I feel his presence every single minute.
This could not be so if he was unknowable. God wants us to know him. He wants to seek him out.
And we are blessed if he touches us in this way with this understanding.
I too love the quote about the Sage.
Thanks for a wonderful commentary. It lifted me up today and gave me time to stop and ponder God's omnipotence.
Hi Shinade,
We are on the same page. If we did not know God, we would not know ourselves. We would not know the joy, beauty, pain or despair - they are all God.
Isn't it unfortunate how many people have died because of religion? That too is part of God's plan. We all have to walk the labyrinth of faith and sometimes we never find our way home.
Thank you for being here today. Thanks too for your warm words. God IS.
Blessings.
Hey Lady A!
I saw this post and I just had to cheap in with some thoughts...
I agree with De Mello when he says that people who shout to know much about God and Jesus, are the ones that know less, because they are blinded by dogma! And to know God, and His issues, one needs to be Dogma Free!
I agree with you in your disagreement with De Mello: I also think that God is knowable! And He is knowable because He is inside each and every one of us; because we all have His essence inside.
"If I didn't know God, I wouldn't know life." - Hear! Hear!! *clap clap clap* well said!!
Again, I agree: we don't have to agree with everything we read, we don't have to drink every single word the so-called masters say or write. The truth is inside each of us, and there are many ways of reaching that same truth.
"Does anything in this passage standout for you; rub you the right way or wrong way?" - in fact there is something that I must say about this passage..."That's the terrible thing about religion. That's what the gospels were saying, that religious people 'knew', so they got rid of Jesus." this is a dangerous thing to say; for he shouldn't include all religions (for starters) and then he should not place "religious people" and "they got rid of Jesus" in the same sentence, for it may inject in some people's feable intellect that the people he is talking about (Jewish people) are the ones to blame for what happened to Jesus, when in fact it is not true...Jesus died the way he did because it was written, it was part of a prophecy. But in a sense, De Mello proves that he lives up to his own words "There is too little dropping of illusions, dropping of errors (...) too little awareness." however he should have been careful about the way he constructed his text, to avoid unnecessary hatred.
Once again, congrats for another intellectual delicatessen, darling :D!
Godly Cheers
Hi Max,
Your response reminded me of an old joke. My karma ran over my dogma. LOL. Okay, I didn't say it HAD to be funny. ;D
As Plato said, "Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something."
I know that we know God. I think De Mello may have said that so we could contemplate on that concept and prove him wrong. That may have been the test? (Hypothesis)
There is a freedom one gains when reading text and knowing that it is someone else's opinion, we never have to agree, we are urged to find the truth for ourselves.
