Anthony De Mello & Awareness

In Anthony De Mello’s book, Awareness, he opens with a story about someone not wanting to go to school.

“A father knocks on his son’s door. "Jaime," he says, "wake up!"

Jaime answers, "I don’t want to get up, Papa."

The father shouts, "Get up, you have to go to school."

Jaime says, "I don’t want to go to school."

"Why not?" asks the father.

"Three reasons," says Jaime. First, because it’s so dull; second, the kids tease me; and third, I hate school.

And the father says, "Well, I am going to give you three reasons why you must go to school.

First, because it is your duty; second, because you are forty-five years old, and third, because you are the headmaster." Wake up! Wake up! You’ve grown up. You’re too big to be asleep. Wake up! Stop playing with your toys.”

The book goes on to explain how we are all asleep. It touches on theories that I interpret this way. What happens if you are in your car and you fall asleep at the wheel? You crash!

How many of us are crashing without even knowing it? How many of us are just broken vehicles moving at slow speed or on cruise control? When we realize what we need and not necessarily want, we begin to repair our vehicles from the inside, but it takes waking up.

Mr. De Mello says, “Most people tell you they want to get out of kindergarten, but don’t believe them. Don’t believe them! All they want you to do is to mend their broken toys. "Give me back my wife. Give me back my job. Give me back my money. Give me back my reputation, my success." This is what they want; they want their toys replaced.”

In this hard hitting tale of awareness, the reader is inclined to wake up, get out of bed, throw off the covers and start living. It is the process of living that Mr. De Mello guides us down the road to enlightenment; not his enlightenment, but our own.

“Spirituality means waking up. Most people, even though they don’t know it, are asleep. They’re born asleep, they live asleep, they marry in their sleep, they breed children in their sleep, they die in their sleep without ever waking up. They never understand the loveliness and the beauty of this thing that we call human existence. You know ~ all mystics ~ Catholic, Christian, non-Christian, no matter what their theology, no matter what their religion ~ are unanimous on one thing: that all is well, all is well. Though everything is a mess, all is well. Strange paradox, to be sure. But, tragically, most people never get to see that all is well because they are asleep. They are having a nightmare.”

On behalf of Mr. De Mello and myself, I invite you all to wake up.

Mini Biography

Anthony De Mello was a Jesuit priest from India who influenced the world through his intuitive understanding of the human condition. Well versed in parables, he influenced many in spiritual traditions outside mainstream Christianity.

His teachings were temporarily banned within the Roman Catholic Church. Though the ban has since been lifted, Catholics are still advised to avoid his writings. Mr. De Mello is among many on the Roman Catholic Church blacklist, a second home for mystics.

"How many of us are crashing without even knowing it? How many of us are just broken vehicles moving at slow speed or on cruise control?" You described our modern society so well, time for a paradigm shift. Time to wake up. Looks like the universe agrees, showing us in full panoramic view, the results of a people operating in their sleep.

I think we all go on cruise control for pweriods in our lives..sometimes just to give us room to think..the problem being sometimes we forget to turn the cruise off and take control

Wow interesting. I have always thought people walk around blind, ignorant to what is go on around them because they don't want to see. As long as they 'think' it doesn't affect them, they are content to wear blinkers.

In the face of all that is happening in these moments...sleep may seem preferable to many.
But being awake means to experience the world through love, which is flowing no matter what happens.
Alexys, you don't seem to ever falter from your place of peace, you are a blessing.

Hi Miruh,
Now just imagine if everyone woke up? Would we realize the glory of living or be so shocked that we are at a standstill?

Hi Robert,
Cruise control is fine, except our speed changes according to our unfoldment. We have to either put our feet on the accelerator or the brakes.

Uber,
Wearing blinkers is easier than opening the eyes. We might get a glimpse of ourselves - and that can frighten anyone.

The story of Osho's childhood makes an intriguing point. He was not forced to go to school as many children are. He has developed perspectives that differ from many ingrained by social institutions. I would highly-recommend readers explore some of writings.

Hi Harmony,
And yet many people will swear that they are sleep deprived. That is a key point - that love always flows no matter what. When we wake up to love, we wake up to living.

Thank you for your kind words. I think my readers are the real blessings.

Hi Liara,
My knowledge of Osho is limited, but I will make a point to learn about his fascinating upbringing.

Thanks.

Hi Alexys!

This post is fantastic. Seems so timely with my decision to pursue my dreams or what I really want to do in life. It's like I have always been aware (running in circles) but because of a lot of factors i've finally decided to start living out my dreams in actuality.

Loving life and the new me and spreading my butterfly wings . . .

For a long time I was not only asleep at the wheel, but driving in the wrong direction. This post is inspirational and points to the significant impact a single individual can have, in reassuring us that a fulfilling life can be lived in a difficult world. Thanks.

Thanks for the interesting post Alexys, it really made me think. I would have to agree that most people go through life asleep. Why else would people ignore the seemingly obvious problems that they should be able to fix?

The only question is: What if the dream that people are living in is so realistic that they never believe that they are really sleeping? For that matter, how can I read this and know that I'm awake or sleeping? Or how could I help someone else to wake up?

Your post raises some very thought provoking questions in my mind. Thank you very much.

Alexys,re:"Now just imagine if everyone woke up? Would we realize the glory of living or be so shocked that we are at a standstill?"
I liked how Harmony put it,"...But being awake means to experience the world through love, which is flowing no matter what happens." The process of awakening is long and challenging,it means,"walking the razor's edge" but it is ultimately what we have to do, or else we are condemned to living limited lives. Thanks for initiating this important discussion.:-))

Amber,
I think waking up is timely to everyone. Often times, we don't know that we are sleeping.

Keep spreading your wings. Now is the time of your life. :D

Alexys Fairfield 10/02/2008 2:16 PM

Karoline,
The important thing is that you realized your direction because that is the key to realization, finding our location and destination.

Alexys Fairfield 10/02/2008 2:22 PM

Nathan,
You bring up a good point. I think sleeping is so comfortable that we don't want to wake up. We would rather stay in the comfort of our blankets. Waking up means stepping into the cold.

The fact that you question whether you are asleep or awake tells me that you are awake. If you were asleep, there would be no reason to question it. I am not sure that we can help others to wake up more than they can help themselves. Waking up means tossing the covers aside and facing ourselves, which could be too painful for some.

Thanks for your profound thoughts.

Alexys Fairfield 10/02/2008 2:24 PM

Miruh,
I agree, Harmony said it eloquently. Thank you for helping to reiterate the message of love.

NathanKP 10/06/2008 11:30 AM

This post motivated me to write about delusions and being "asleep" so to speak.

I also featured a movie which I think has a very important bearing on the issue of being "asleep."
