10 Ways To Avoid The Psychiatrist Couch

I have noticed lately that many people, despite anticipation of a new presidential administration and the promise of an economic buoyancy, still seem to be laden with a serious case of the doldrums.

When the pressure gets to be too much for you, what do you do? Do you turn to addictions? Destructive behavior? Do you turn the behavior on yourself or someone else?

We all can feel like we are behind the eight ball from time to time but it doesn’t mean that we can’t get out of the way.

Following are ten ways that you can maintain sanity and avoid the psychiatrist couch.

1. Acknowledge what you are feeling and what has happened to make you feel that way. If you have been through emotional upheaval, go with it. Let all the feelings associated with it pass through you.

2. Take time to focus on your next step. Write down what you want to do and how you want to do it. Writing will help clarify your plans. Don’t keep rehashing what has happened. Let it go.

3. Take action. Move your body, mind and spirit. Refer to your list or be spontaneous. Just do something. The more good experiences you pile up, the more the unpleasant ones disappear.

4. Exercise good will, not just with strangers but with people you love. Random acts of kindness equals random acts of love. Not only are you touching others, but you are creating good karma that will be returned to you tenfold.

5. Take a walk in nature. Even big cities have parks where you can commune with nature. Listen to the sounds around you and observe how they make you feel.

6. Allow time for play. There is a reason that it is called recreation because you are recreating a time when you are not worried. Jump into a swimming pool, hit a tennis ball, catch a baseball, kick a football or play with a beach ball.

7. Spend time with friends doing fun activities. Go to a movie, concert, shopping, cook a meal together, attend the zoo, or an amusement park. Create good memories and they will never let you down.

8. Laugh and laugh some more. Laughter frees you from world matter. The longer you laugh, the more you are free. It is also a great way to exercise your heart.

9. Introspection is fuel to the Soul. Read a good book, listen to a good piece of music; both will capture and hold your senses. Then after you have rewarded yourself, be silent. Let the words fall out of your head. Rinse and repeat.

10. Love is all we are here for. Open your heart and love will flood it a thousand times. Keep giving it away and you will never be without it. It is here to stay. It is the answer to all of life’s questions. If you feel that you don’t have it, reach out. I am sending it to you now. Keep it flowing.

Your ideas are uplifting and remind people they have the power to change the way they think and feel, whenever they choose to do so. Readers here may be interested in a book called "God's Shrink."

Hi Liara,

Thanks for the link. I love the title.

Robert,
Hopefully not at the same time. That can get a little messy. ;D

My note pad never leaves my side.

Beautiful thoughts...

If everyone who reads this tried to do all these 10 things today...then we would all be a little closer to serenity (aka sanity ;)

Much love, M

These are very good reminders, Alexys. For me, I always try to make people laugh instead of crying about my childhood. In fact, some people think I am not serious about life not unless they get to know me better.

Thanks!

You know what, I think you could add to that list simply to read posts like this. Sometimes we just need to be reminded that we can just look at the world more positively and stay in control.

Why is it that we feed our bodies and not our souls ?

Those ten things are just as important as protein and carbs :)

Taking responsibility, being aware of your choices and habits, those matter too... Being honest with yourself and honest with others...

Balance in everything....

Have a good weekend, Alexys !

All wonderful tips, I like #3 and #4.
Just being active, moving the energy that is stuck in negative feelings does a lot to change your mind-set. When we do something that uplifts others is really first uplifting to our own spirits.
Thanks for this helpful list.
I hope the wildfires and wind in LA die down soon. Sending you cool, peaceful vibes for a happy weekend!:D

Hi Maithri,
We could all use some serenity. Thank you my dear.

Thanks for the love.

Hi Angel,
Laughing is a great exercise isn't it? It keeps your heart going strong. It's the best medicine.

Thanks for sharing.

Mspennylane,

Thanks for your generous comment my friend. I agree that sometimes we have to be reminded of the obvious.

Stay positive. :D

Annie,
You are so right. We go to the gym regularly, watch what we put into our bodies, but not what we put into our hearts - and that's what matters, how we live our lives and exercise our good will.

Thanks for those valuable additions. Happy weekend!

Hi Miruh,

Moving the energy through us is a wonderful way to free our Souls. I am an advocate of random acts of kindness.

Those fires are wild. It has become part of the norm living in Southern California. Thanks for those wishes.

All the best to you.

These are all wonderful things that will definitely help.

I was frozen for a long long time and still deal with many issues.

You are aware of some of them from reading at Max's site.

My biggest gift that God blessed me with was so very simple and I was completely unaware of how it would change my life.

One day my husband came home with a small inexpensive digital camera.

Now it has become a passion. A passion that is plunging forward through so many phobias.

I get out now and take walks and drives. I stomp through ditches without a thought of a snake.

I will do just about anything if I really want the picture.

It was such a simple gift yet it made such a profound difference in my life!

Hi Shinade,

What an awesome gift. That camera was your key to freedom. It empowers you in so many ways and your passion really shows through your photography. You are so full of love and life that I can't imagine you any other way. No matter how frozen you were in the past, you have certainly melted into a beautiful spirit spreading love wherever you go - a fine example of how we can overcome our past with the gift of love.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Btw, sometimes I have trouble leaving a message at your site, but I will keep trying. (It's probably my browser. I have to update my computer.)

Blessings my friend.
