Our Spiritual Economy

Today Citigroup placed 53,000 jobs on the chopping block in an attempt to keep breathing among the rubble of massive losses tied to bad mortgage debt.
Other layoffs in the pipeline include Sun Microsystems that could eliminate as many as 6,000 employees; Coca Cola is planning cuts in its IT department, which currently has about 1,100 employees; Sony Ericsson will lay off 450 employees at the company’s R&D department and AMD has terminated 500 jobs worldwide in an effort to cut costs and achieve a $1.5 billion “break-even.”
Yahoo has cut its workforce by 10 percent or about 1,400 to 1,500 in October.
Imagine the number of people who woke up this morning and were told that they no longer have a job, their 401k is gone and they won’t be able to pay their mortgage?
These are the same people who thought they had job security - which we have come to know does not exist. These are the same people who graduated at the top of their class and were on the fast track to a distinguished career. These are the same people who have worked hard all their lives only to have what they have worked for get ripped right out from under them.
There has been so much talk about the economy - falling stock markets, housing market slumps, bankruptcies, job losses and companies going belly up that it’s enough to make us feel uneasy about our future.
Our spiritual economy - how we handle stress and loss - is just as vital as our world economy. This current state of economy can be quite devastating to our state of mind. If we can’t keep our inner world on track, then certainly our outer world will be off track.
Charles Dickens hints at our spiritual economy in the opening of
A Tale Of Two Cities.
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way."
Though Dickens tale was set in London and describes the period before and during the French Revolution, he lucidly particularized the vacillation of our spiritual economy.
There is a pattern embedded into our consciousness that prepares us for polarity - light and darkness - good and evil - hills and valleys - yin and yang.
Even when the most despoiling particulars happen to us, our Soul is unharmed. Our Soul is a catalyst. Our Soul is an invincible player in the game of life. It can crawl through the mud, jump over hurdles, go through fire, leap from tall buildings and do whatever it takes to survive. It is our ally. Our companion. Our guidance. Our Soul survival is our raison d'être.
Saint John of the Cross was a Spanish poet, Roman Catholic mystic and Carmelite priest in the 16th century who wrote a treatise called, Dark Night of the Soul (La noche oscura de la alma.)
Dark Night of the Soul is the name of a poem that depicts his mystical development on his journey to God. It was written while he was imprisoned by his Carmelite brothers, who opposed his reformations to the Order.
Throughout history there have been dark periods - dark nights of Souls all over the world. It’s a natural part of development; an expected test.
We have to realize that whatever happens to us is not going to kill our Soul. It is only temporary. A state in which we can recover our connection to our source of power and love - our connection with our only source - the source within.
We are wired to a higher power and we have to fortify our lives with connections - all kinds of connections. The longer we stay connected, the longer we can survive. When we stay connected with ourselves, we can stay connected to others.
So how do we do it? Think of every person we meet as a connection. Even if it is a bridge connection to connect to a main source, every person is a bridge to our future. This dos not mean to use others for our personal gain, it just means keeping our communication open.
For instance, if we work at a company, we must keep our ears, eyes and options open. Make good contacts, associations and friendships. Treat everyone with respect - everyone from the CEO’s to the LOWEO’s (a term that I once heard someone use for anyone under a CEO.)
Forge relationships with everyone - everyone. Build a fortress of good and reliable people. Having a personal army of people in our corner aids in our spiritual economy and helps us avoid needing a spiritual bailout.
How do you handle stress?
What would you do if you woke up and didn’t have a job?
Do you have a plan B?

love this post - I've been concerned lately that people have been isolating instead of reaching out.
...and here is me posting about shopping. How shallow! :(
It is a sad state of affairs out there. I believe in forging good relationships in any circumstances. xo
Very interesting post! I have been worried about the bad news we hear about the economy and it's negative effect on affect on individual lives. I wonder if we had no access to media would the economy be as bad as it is now. I think at times fear begets more fear and makes a bad situation worse. So I'm doing my best to stay positive :)

Hi Tracee,
I have those same concerns, especially at this time of year. We have to keep our eyes open and offer compassion where we can.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi Gillian,
How are you?
Au contraire, shopping offers great solace in spiritual unfoldment. We need to shop to alleviate some of the pressure. Even if we don't spend a penny, window shopping doesn't cost anything.
Thanks for adding your thoughts.
Hi Tiffany,
I know the media exacerbates everything. Their job is to instill fear. Our job is not to react to it. We have to stay informed, but not afraid. Staying positive is an effective way to combat all fear.
Thanks for adding your thoughts.
Timely and for those who never experience job loss at the degree we are at this time, it can be very stressful.
Although, you should always be one step ahead of what's going on.
This time, it may be hard to do. But a job, does not make a person.
Cheers!
Hi Alexys!
As always this is what I all needed. Your words is an elixir that smooths what's sore in my soul.
Yes, despite the disparity of polarities or dualities in life, there will always be a fine middle line where a temporary balance can be achieved - which aims to keep us all 'level-grounded'.
Missing you my blogger friend.
I've been in voluntary unemployment for sometime now. So whatever happened in the real world did not affect me much.
Yes,I was really concerned with mates who are working in the financial industry or invest heavily in stocks. I couldn't stop bugging them to make sure they are all right. That's all I could do on my little part.
How do I handle stress?
I head straight to the kitchen. Bake bake bake or cook!!! Now I stick to internet!
What would I do if I was sacked?
Perhaps wallow in self-pity and start job searching!
Plan B? Hm... start my own business! :P
Hey CM,
How ARE you?
I agree that a job does not make a person, but it does give them a sense of purpose and worth.
If only we could all do what we love, imagine the energy we would receive when we go into shops and the like - everyone would have a smile on their face.
Cheers my friend.
Hi Amber,
We have missed your warm smile around these parts.
Balance is the great equalizer isn't it? Without it, we wouldn't have a leg to stand on. LOL.
Thanks for sharing your Soul today.
Sending love and warmth.
Cheers.
Hi SheR,
As human beings, we are all a little affected by the current state of the world. Even though it may not touch us in our immediate personal lives, it ignites our compassion.
When the stock marlet crashed recently, the television news showed a young man who had just started at Merrill Lynch that day. He broke down in tears because he had prepared for his job all his life.
You are fortunate that you have a passion to keep your Soul occupied and cooking is a fantastic way to alleviate stress and share love at the same time. What a gift you have - except I don't know how you can cook on the internet? LOL.
Thanks for sharing your story.
Hi Alexys!!
Wow...what a gorgeous image! Is it Salvador Dalí's?
Oh yeah...and this week, Europe woke up with the daunting news that 350 thousand people are at risk of losing their job, in the car industry (it is a lot of people...and if we add to your numbers...my Lord...)!
"Our spiritual economy - how we handle stress and loss - is just as vital as our world economy." - I absolutely agree with you. If people have a deficit in their spiritual economy they may suffer from serious psychological issues that later on will reflect on the domestic economy, and consequently (if the numbers keep rising) it will affect the world economy. If one's spiritual side is down, he/she may not be able to function properly...
Dickens quote is so up-to-date, isn't it? As I read it I was mentally applying it to our times...we are living times of light and darkness, we are in an epoch of belief and incredulity, hope has sprung yet despair will be the prevailing sentiment this winter...we have everything and nothing at the same time. Dickens was right, and his eternal words remain right...
"Our Soul survival is our raison d'être." - gorgeously said!
"Think of every person we meet as a connection. Even if it is a bridge connection to connect to a main source, every person is a bridge to our future." - bridge to our future...yes, that is true. And many times we don't even realise this; all the dark experiences we go through weave a bright future (be it here or in the after life or even in the next life). But we choose always to pull our own hair when facing dire situations, we get stressed, we wish to scream...we never choose to see that experiences and people are "a bridge to our future"...know what I mean?
"Treat everyone with respect - everyone from the CEO’s to the LOWEO’s (a term that I once heard someone use for anyone under a CEO.)" - Amen to that! "LOWEO"? Oh my...is it me or does that words irradiate contempt for people under a CEO? Perhaps it is just me...
"Having a personal army of people in our corner aids in our spiritual economy and helps us avoid needing a spiritual bailout." - beautiful *clap clap clap*! I fully agree with you!
"How do you handle stress?" - by following my mom's advice: remain cool; the tempest will go away eventually. Remain focused; if you get swallowed up by stress your mind will be blurred and you'll miss the solution to the problem.
"What would you do if you woke up and didn't have a job?" - I would move on to plan B.
"Do you have a plan B?" - man...you read our minds lol. Yes, I have a plan B (with a mom like mine, you have to have a plan B lol).
Aaah, you answered my question at the end of the article: it is Dalí's!! I don't have this painting in my Dalí "virtual collection"...but one can't miss his style and the mystic component in his work.
Lady A, fantastic post! And by the way: I love these quizzes at the end of your articles :D!
Spiritual Economy Cheers
I love the beginning of "The Tale of Two Cities." It seems that everyone knows the beginning but I wonder how many people actually read the whole book.
"We have to realize that whatever happens to us is not going to kill our Soul. It is only temporary. A state in which we can recover our connection to our source of power and love - our connection with our only source - the source within."
Wonderful statement. People assign to much wait to their possessions. Possessions are worthless it is aspirations and inspirations that matter more.
NathanKP - Imagination Manifesto
Powerful image! It says it all; no matter what is happening on the outside, you can be open and calm to it all and be focused on spiritual courage that weathers all calamities.
Love the reference to A Tale of Two Cities, haven't read it since I was a pre-teen.
Thanks for all the research on St John of the Cross.
Great post!
Human beings often brainwash themselves. Security is not something you experience based on holding a paying job, having a predictable income or, being tied to a predictable pension. These are human interpretations of material or physical security. These visions actually distract you from the spiritual security you have always had and will always have. It is immeasurable, intangible and life-transforming. The recent shake-up of economic change in the physical world can be perceived as a positive thing. At times, people need to be shaken out of their mental state of complacency to begin to rediscover the truth has been hidden behind everything you thought mattered.
Hi Max,
"Wow...what a gorgeous image! Is it Salvador Dalí's?"
Yes, it is the master surrealist picking off points of his imagination.
"Oh yeah...and this week, Europe woke up with the daunting news that 350 thousand people are at risk of losing their job, in the car industry (it is a lot of people...and if we add to your numbers...my Lord...)!"
That is really devastating. Three of our major auto makers are in trouble. They are waiting for government assistance.
"I absolutely agree with you. Exactly.
"Dickens quote is so up-to-date, isn't it? I thought he was an appropriate companion to this piece. His words are timely and just perfect aren't they?
"Our Soul survival is our raison d'être." - gorgeously said!"
Thank you my dear. I have loved that word for ages. I rarely get to use it, so I brought it out for a special treat.
"And many times we don't even realise this; all the dark experiences we go through weave a bright future (be it here or in the after life or even in the next life)."
Yes. From the darkness comes light.
"But we choose always to pull our own hair when facing dire situations, we get stressed, we wish to scream...we never choose to see that experiences and people are "a bridge to our future"...know what I mean?"
I know exactly what you mean.
"LOWEO"? Oh my...is it me or does that words irradiate contempt for people under a CEO? Perhaps it is just me..."
It shows how people in certain positions think that they are closer to God in those [high] positions so they place themselves on pedestals and toss grapes to the plebians.
"...stress?" - by following my mom's advice: remain cool; the tempest will go away eventually. Remain focused; if you get swallowed up by stress your mind will be blurred and you'll miss the solution to the problem."
You mom is a saint. In every problem there is a solution.
"Yes, I have a plan B (with a mom like mine, you have to have a plan B lol)."
Sometimes we even need a plan C, D, E, F,...Z.
"Aaah, you answered my question at the end of the article: it is Dalí's!! I don't have this painting in my Dalí "virtual collection"...but one can't miss his style and the mystic component in his work."
So true. A distinctively imaginative style that echoes the throes of passion.
"Lady A, fantastic post! And by the way: I love these quizzes at the end of your articles :D!"
Thank you darling for your supportive and loving feedback.
Spirituality Cheers!
Hi Nathan,
That's funny that you should say that because I can't even remember the whole book. I have always loved the opening though and those words are forever emblazoned in my mind.
Possessions ARE worthless and we place so much importance on the care and feeding of them.
Thanks for your wonderful addition.
Hi Miruh,
Yes, no matter what is happening in our outer world, we can keep our inner world in tact through focus, meditation and faith. We have to remember that we can weather the storm, no matter what. I haven't read ...Tale.. in a while, but the beginning is awesome.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Hi Liara,
Humans are an intricate piece of work. We change, constrict and contrast all the time. We fill our heads with folly and follow the consequences blindly.
I love the term "Spiritual Security." I realize that some look at the shake up as a positive thing - the shaking off of the moss - but many are not strong enough to understand that interpretation. I agree with you that we have to rediscover the truth and hopefully we can regain some spiritual ground in the process.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi Alexys,
"Yes, it is the master surrealist picking off points of his imagination."
That is an awesome description of his mastery...
"Three of our major auto makers are in trouble. They are waiting for government assistance."
So I heard...there was a session yesterday to make a decision about that, right?
"I thought he was an appropriate companion to this piece. His words are timely and just perfect aren't they?"
You thought well! Yes, they are.
"Thank you my dear. I have loved that word for ages. I rarely get to use it, so I brought it out for a special treat."
You are welcome, dear! And how special that treat was...for us all :)!
"Yes. From the darkness comes light."
Absolutely!
"I know exactly what you mean."
«Only youuuuuuu!» (By Platters)...

I am not fond of this type of behaviour....
"You mom is a saint. In every problem there is a solution."
LOL a ferocious saint, yes LOL. Amen!
"Sometimes we even need a plan C, D, E, F,...Z."
Girl...all I can do is *High Five*! You rock!!
"So true. A distinctively imaginative style that echoes the throes of passion."
You are so poetic, Lady A: I am marvelled; I really am *bowing*!
"Thank you darling for your supportive and loving feedback."
Don't mention it...besides, I am your fan :D!
Divine Cheers
P.S: word verification is "work stil"...how about that?
Hi Alexys,
This is a powerful post. It highlights many of the economic catastrophes currently happening around the globe.
Yet at the same time it is a positive post. We are reminded that we can overcome anything if we only choose to do so.
Life is not easy. I do not believe that life was intended to be easy. We are hear on this plane at this time to learn.
And to learn we must be taught. How are we taught? There are many different methods of course but I am speaking of soul learning and character building.
For this we must have obstacles to overcome and rise above. Therefore, all through out history we can find millions and millions of stories to inspire us.
Some are famous such as the Priest you mention in this article and others are simple people who history will never remember and their tales never be heard.
Nonetheless they are soul survivors as well.
The dark side of human nature has been at one of it's highest periods for the last few decades. Greed and thought only for one's self has ruled.
And now we see the results. For those that have lived this life style I have pity. but, they now have their lesson to learn.
As for me and how I handle stress. I always cling to a simple prhase.
"This too shall pass."
Wonderful post Alexys...bravo!!
Hi Max,
"That is an awesome description of his mastery..."
Thanks darling.
"So I heard...there was a session yesterday to make a decision about that, right?"
Yes, they can't decide on the terms - at the expense of millions. I wonder what they really discuss behind those doors.
"«Only youuuuuuu!» (By Platters)..."
Ha ha ha ha. My mother loved that song.
"I am not fond of this type of behaviour...."
I am with you.
"Girl...all I can do is *High Five*! You rock!!
You are so poetic, Lady A: I am marvelled; I really am *bowing*!"
Aw shucks thanks. Thanks for all the love.
"P.S: word verification is "work stil"...how about that?"
Those are amazing aren't they? Sometimes they are divine.
Stay Divine Cheers.
Hi Shinade,
The human mind is resilient and an amazing machine isn't it? It won't let us down. I agree that life is not easy, but it is certainly a journey with the sights and sounds of passion.
Soul discovery is life's biggest rewards and I salute those unsung heroes out there who never get their day in the sun. Those who work quietly in the corner making it a better place for everyone else.
That's funny that you mention, "This too shall pass." I almost ended the post with it, but I am happy that you did it for me.
Thank you so much for adding another dimension to this stream.
Hi Lady A,
"Thanks darling."
Don't mention it :D!
"Yes, they can't decide on the terms - at the expense of millions. I wonder what they really discuss behind those doors."
I heard they don't know exactly how much they need...it makes us wonder, doesn't it?
"Ha ha ha ha. My mother loved that song."
lol....she did? It is a lovely song! I love it too...
"I am with you."
*High Five*....
"Aw shucks thanks. Thanks for all the love."
Anything for my girl! :D
"Those are amazing aren't they? Sometimes they are divine."
I believe they are divine! You see, I am a strong believer in signs....how about you?
We are Divine Cheers
Hi Max,
"I heard they don't know exactly how much they need...it makes us wonder, doesn't it?:"
I think they are playing poker with our lives. They are taking bets on our survival.
"I believe they are divine! You see, I am a strong believer in signs....how about you?"
A resounding YES! They are all around us. I especially like those vanity (personalized) license plates. When I read them, they say something that I need to hear.
We are Super Divine Cheers!
Hi Lady A,
"I think they are playing poker with our lives. They are taking bets on our survival."
B*s***ds!
"A resounding YES! They are all around us."
Absolutely!! We just have to be attentive :D!
"I especially like those vanity (personalized) license plates. When I read them, they say something that I need to hear."
Now that is something!! And it works all the time, right?
God bless Cheers
When I awoke without a job, I took the initiative to create a fabulous replacement. I also evolved to realize I am the master of my journey, how I feel and what I will do. From the moment I took 100% responsibility for all of my conditions, my perspective and life experiences evolved to expand me beyond measure.
Hi Max,
"B*s***ds!"
ROFL. You have such a wondeful way with words. ROFL.
Yes, those vanity plates work all the time.
God Speaks Cheers!
Liara,
You have been blessed with the skills that many people lack. It is a fantastic gift to recognize that we are the captain of our fate. Thanks for spreading the message of responsibility and leading the way to self-discovery.
