The Death Of Opinion

When my niece was 10 years old, her teacher taught her about opinion. She explained how important it is to have an opinion and how everyone needs to exercise their opinion.
The teacher proceeded to write the word opinion on the chalkboard. Then she told the class to write their opinion. My niece wrote the word opinion all over her paper. She thought that was what the teacher wanted.
I find my niece's story funny and interesting. Although her 10 year old mind didn’t comprehend what the teacher meant, her tabula rasa still processed it her way.
We are a society of opinionated individuals who try and push their opinions on others. When someone doesn’t agree with us, we get bent out of shape and can’t understand why they “just don’t get it.”
However, is our opinion based on what we think others want to hear or does it come from our own experiences and they way we hear. My niece's teacher clearly knew what she wanted the students to do, but my niece didn’t hear the teacher’s intent.
Opinion is important. It is a belief or conclusion held with confidence but usually not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof, but it is something in which our views are strong.
Some people think that their opinion is the only one that matters and one opinion is usually dominant in newspapers or television news stations because those mediums want to sway an opinion, but we owe it to ourselves to form our own opinions and not be bullied by someone else's view.
Frequently, opinions are also disguised as intimidating facts to make us feel bad if we don’t go along with a popular stance. Your opinion is just as important as anyone else’s. It is your right to be yourself and not let anyone else influence you.
Even this post about opinion is just my opinion. You can agree or disagree. You get to have your own opinion here. No pressure to have mine.
What is your opinion on opinion? Do you think we have suffered a death of many opinions to highlight only popular views?
“People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Opinion has caused more trouble on this little earth than plagues or earthquakes”
~Voltaire
“We are so vain that we even care for the opinion of those we don't care for.”
~Marie Von Ebner-Eschenbach
A wise man makes his own decisions, an ignorant man follows public opinion”
~Chinese Proverb
“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.”
~Marcus Aurelius
“Don't believe your friends when they ask you to be honest with them. All they really want is to be maintained in the good opinion they have of themselves.”
~Albert Camus
“Opinion is the medium between knowledge and ignorance.”
~Plato
“There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion.”
~Winston Churchill
“Truth always rests with the minority, and the minority is always stronger than the majority, because the minority is generally formed by those who really have an opinion, while the strength of a majority is illusory, formed by the gangs who have no opinion -- and who, therefore, in the next instant (when it is evident that the minority is the stronger) assume its opinion... while truth again reverts to a new minority.”
~Soren Kierkegaard
“My psychiatrist told me I was crazy and I said I want a second opinion. He said okay, you're ugly too.”
~Rodney Dangerfield

What clever quotes you choose to present here. Each one offers a reflection through the universal kaleidoscope of soul. As a person slowly detaches from and dissolves opinion, he lightens his energy. He senses with deeper clarity. He realizes he faces reasons for anger, fear and worry to prove they do not exist. This is part of the process of rediscovering silence, the wisdom of an empty mind and universal love that expands exponentially to infinity and even beyond that.
LOL @ Rodney Dangerfield.
My opinion is that too many people have opinions. :)
Liara,
I wish more people could rediscover silence, there is solace when words disappear and soul is the only sound we hear.
Uber,
I agree. Those who share their opinions are too willing to have others follow their opinions. They need the consensus of others to give their opinions lift off.
That was classic Dangerfield wasn't it? LOL.
Alexys, increasing numbers of human beings are opening their minds to the secrets of silence, They just do not consciously acknowledge this yet.
Liara,
At least it's a start. They get all the spiritual nutrition they need without even trying. ;D
The Zen perspective is that thinking is a hindrance. To trust that Higher forces direct the flow of energy and spiritual nutrition that is right for you is to surrender to invite experience you truly need and accept what is.
Liara,
True acceptance can make a long road seem less so and the inner mirror more acceptable.
Hello Lady A,
Merry Tuesday!! :D
Your niece had an extremely curious reaction to the teacher's instructions...I don't think she didn't hear the teacher's intent; I think your niece displayed what opinion really means: fill the air with a bunch of thoughts that can either be interpreted well or not (her writing the word opinion all over the paper was like an abstract painting: some interpret it well, others don't and find it a complete nonsense). This proves that she was a very smart kid.
Let me share something with you: when I was 4, the teacher told me to paint a boiled egg (for easter) but I looked at it, I took its shell off and ate it. You see, in my mind there was no point in painting a boiled egg (I found it silly)...the purpose of a boiled egg is to be eaten, specially around that time of the year. Yet for other kids it made perfect sense to paint the egg. Of course, the teacher called my mom due to this odd behaviour LOL LOL...
Our opinion should never be imposed on others. However it is understandable why we do it: our parents try to impose their opinion on us (under the flag of shaping our character/mind) for years; thus we get used to it, I suppose.
"Some people think that their opinion is the only one that matters and one opinion is usually dominant in newspapers or television news stations because those mediums want to sway an opinion, but we owe it to ourselves to form our own opinions and not be bullied by someone else's view." - absolutely!!! *standing ovation*! Many years ago, the media served the purpose of informing us...nowadays the media exists to shape the public opinion...they are so bloody bias, it hurts *nodding*. It seems like they want us numb, thoughtless and just swallow their opinions and ideas without questioning them. They have another thing coming with me...
"Frequently, opinions are also disguised as intimidating facts to make us feel bad if we don’t go along with a popular stance." - true.
"Your opinion is just as important as anyone else’s. It is your right to be yourself and not let anyone else influence you." - Hear! Hear!
"What is your opinion on opinion? Do you think we have suffered a death of many opinions to highlight only popular views?" - my opinion is opinion is only a cluster of thoughts that are to be shared: you either agree with it or not, but you have to respect it (no matter what). Do not impose your thoughts on others, stop listening to yourself only, listen to others, expand what your opinions...and learn that you know nothing yet know everything. Opinion exists to teach the concept of generosity, and it is a big test for the Ego.

Excellent article, Lady A *clap clap clap*! I am glad I scrolled down the page, girl :D!
Opinionated Cheers
Hi Max,
My niece is so funny sometimes. She used to tell imaginative stories and insisted on acting them out. If she is interrupted she will start all over from the beginning. Then she will tell the same story the next day and the next day......
"I think your niece displayed what opinion really means: fill the air with a bunch of thoughts that can either be interpreted well or not (her writing the word opinion all over the paper was like an abstract painting: some interpret it well, others don't and find it a complete nonsense)."
That is such a sweet description. Now that she is getting older, she understands the variance of opinions.
"This proves that she was a very smart kid."
She was clever for her age.
"Let me share something with you: when I was 4, the teacher told me to paint a boiled egg (for easter) but I looked at it, I took its shell off and ate it. ROFL. ROFL. At least you didn't wind up with egg on your face (that's an expression). I LOVE IT! LOL.
"Our opinion should never be imposed on others. However it is understandable why we do it: our parents try to impose their opinion on us (under the flag of shaping our character/mind) for years; thus we get used to it, I suppose."
Yes, when we don't want to hear our parent's opinion, we are called stubborn. When we grow up, we are called tenacious instead of stubborn.
"Many years ago, the media served the purpose of informing us...nowadays the media exists to shape the public opinion...they are so bloody bias, it hurts *nodding*. Yes, I agree. There is a book called Bias (on my book list) that delves into this. You would be surprised how the media started off as impartial and now they are proud to be partial.
"...my opinion is opinion is only a cluster of thoughts that are to be shared: you either agree with it or not, but you have to respect it (no matter what). I have noticed that opinions are sometimes nothing more than ego-bashing. (Not ours - others).

"“There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion.” ~Winston Churchill" - Aaah, Winston...so very true!"
My favorite.

My second favorite. It makes me laugh every time.
"Excellent article, Lady A *clap clap clap*! I am glad I scrolled down the page, girl :D!"
Thank you my darling. I am glad that you scrolled down too. Thanks for your outstanding opinions and your view on the world at large.
Room With A View Cheers!
Brilliant, and I laughed right out loud with that last one... Thanks!
Hi Lady A,
"My niece is so funny sometimes. She used to tell imaginative stories and insisted on acting them out. If she is interrupted she will start all over from the beginning. Then she will tell the same story the next day and the next day......"
LOL you have one cool niece. I think there is a little actress in her ;).
"That is such a sweet description. Now that she is getting older, she understands the variance of opinions."
lol I swear it was not my intention to be sweet, but thank you :)! Oh, when we get older we are forced to adjust to the world and its "thought administration" *nodding*.
"She was clever for her age."
It is evident.
"ROFL. ROFL. At least you didn't wind up with egg on your face (that's an expression). I LOVE IT! LOL."
LOL LOL...no, I was very sincere about (and conscious of) my action...perhaps that is why I wasn't embarrassed at all LOL.
LOL I knew I had to share this past event with you lol.
"Yes, when we don't want to hear our parent's opinion, we are called stubborn. When we grow up, we are called tenacious instead of stubborn."
So true. LOL LOL indeed; but in the end there is no difference...our stubborness/tenaciousness is only an expression of our personal evolution (for we always learn something new), no matter how irritating it may be LOL.
"Yes, I agree. There is a book called Bias (on my book list) that delves into this. You would be surprised how the media started off as impartial and now they are proud to be partial."
I must look for that book. Yes, they used to teach in Journalism schools that reporters had to be impartial; now they must teach them the opposite. Don't these people have pride? They are worse than politicians *nodding*. Not to mention the fact that the media thinks it holds all the power.
"I have noticed that opinions are sometimes nothing more than ego-bashing. (Not ours - others)."
You know you are right...so sad *nodding*.
"This speaks volumes."
This is why I like conversing with you...
"My second favorite. It makes me laugh every time."
It is hilarious! I mean, you pay a fortune/hour to receive therapeutical treatment and at the end you hear that not only you're crazy but also ugly? LOL LOL...priceless!
"Thank you my darling. I am glad that you scrolled down too. Thanks for your outstanding opinions and your view on the world at large."
You are welcome ^5! Aah, you are kind, girl *bowing*!
"Room With A View Cheers!" - I love that movie (I haven't read the book yet: I must have it though)!!! Bonham's character was simply amazing (I think she reminded me of myself LOL).
Sense and Sensibility Cheers
Hi Megan,
So did I. I keep laughing at that one. It's too funny.
Thanks for dropping by today and sharing a laugh.
Come back soon.
Hi Max,
"LOL you have one cool niece. I think there is a little actress in her ;)."
I do too. When I introduce her to new music (to broaden her horizons), she'll sometimes do an interpretative dance. LOL. My sister thinks that her child is "different," but she is just expressing her creativity.
"thought administration"...."
Love that phrase.
"...our stubborness/tenaciousness is only an expression of our personal evolution (for we always learn something new), no matter how irritating it may be LOL."
Another awesome description my dear.
"Yes, they used to teach in Journalism schools that reporters had to be impartial; now they must teach them the opposite. Don't these people have pride? They are worse than politicians *nodding*. Not to mention the fact that the media thinks it holds all the power."
It's true. The writer is Bernard Goldberg, a news veteran. He also wrote the book "A Slobbering Love Affair Starring Barack Obama," about how the media actually helped him get elected because they all wanted to be part of history. Fascinating story.
"This is why I like conversing with you..."
The feeling is mutual.
"It is hilarious! I mean, you pay a fortune/hour to receive therapeutical treatment and at the end you hear that not only you're crazy but also ugly? LOL LOL...priceless!"
I wonder what therapists really think when they listen to those stories all day? I think at some point, they must check out mentally.
"Room With A View Cheers!" - I love that movie (I haven't read the book yet: I must have it though)!!! Bonham's character was simply amazing (I think she reminded me of myself LOL)."
I can't recall the film, but I know Merchant Ivory films (producers) are usually very slooooooooow moving. I did see Sense and Sensibility and fell asleep mentally.
Interestingly enough Helen Bonham and Emma Thompson were both involved with Kenneth Branagh.
Wide Awake Cheers!
Hi Lady A,
"I do too. When I introduce her to new music (to broaden her horizons), she'll sometimes do an interpretative dance. LOL. My sister thinks that her child is "different," but she is just expressing her creativity."
I like that "interpretative dance" :D! Your niece is highly creative, which is a blessing!
"Love that phrase."
Thank you *bowing*!
"Another awesome description my dear."

Let me write it down...done - thank you! LOL LOL that is one cool title for a book LOL *nodding; he may be partly right (because you know that even if a politician has good ideas but the media doesn't fancy him/her...he/she will get nowhere [no matter how honest they may be]), but in President Obama's case the victory was due to many factors.
I will look for this book too (obrigada)!
"The feeling is mutual."
:D
"I wonder what therapists really think when they listen to those stories all day? I think at some point, they must check out mentally."
I wonder the same...but by the answers they give (i.e. almost none), I'd say they are not listening properly. LOL absolutely!
"I can't recall the film, but I know Merchant Ivory films (producers) are usually very slooooooooow moving. I did see Sense and Sensibility and fell asleep mentally."
LOL you fell asleep mentally during Sense and Sensibility? LOL...I loved that movie (I must have watched it 5 times now); but I am guilty of loving slow movies, I confess lol.
"Interestingly enough Helen Bonham and Emma Thompson were both involved with Kenneth Branagh."
Yes, Emma Thompson was married to Kenneth Branagh; but I didn't know he had been involved with Helen Bonham...my God, that man takes all the women *nodding*...it is his talent (he is a hell of an actor)...it sweeps women off their feet *nodding*.
The Age of Innocence Cheers
Hi Max,
[Slobbering Love Affair...] "...that is one cool title for a book LOL *nodding; he may be partly right (because you know that even if a politician has good ideas but the media doesn't fancy him/her...he/she will get nowhere [no matter how honest they may be]), but in President Obama's case the victory was due to many factors."
Spot on. The media has the power and the capital to move world opinion. Let me know what you think. I would be interested in hearing an opinion of someone out of the country.
"I wonder the same...but by the answers they give (i.e. almost none), I'd say they are not listening properly. LOL absolutely!"
I knew of a therapist who had to go on vacation every three weeks to "relax." And why is an hour only '50' minutes?
"LOL you fell asleep mentally during Sense and Sensibility? LOL...I loved that movie (I must have watched it 5 times now); but I am guilty of loving slow movies, I confess lol."
Don't get me wrong. I love a slow build up too, but Merchant/Ivory films are a bit too slow.
"Yes, Emma Thompson was married to Kenneth Branagh; but I didn't know he had been involved with Helen Bonham...my God, that man takes all the women *nodding*...it is his talent (he is a hell of an actor)...it sweeps women off their feet *nodding*."
Kenneth had his finest 'hour' in the 90's. Did you see Dead Again? He doesn't do too many films, but a lot of TV stuff in England.
Atonement Cheers!
Lady A,
"Spot on. The media has the power and the capital to move world opinion. Let me know what you think. I would be interested in hearing an opinion of someone out of the country."
I will, girl ^5!
"I knew of a therapist who had to go on vacation every three weeks to "relax." And why is an hour only '50' minutes?"
I can imagine! Did you know that therapists undergo therapy (because of all the things they supposedly listen to)? LOL, they steal 10 minutes from their patients *nodding*.
"Don't get me wrong. I love a slow build up too, but Merchant/Ivory films are a bit too slow."
LOL I know understand...
"Kenneth had his finest 'hour' in the 90's. Did you see Dead Again? He doesn't do too many films, but a lot of TV stuff in England."
Dead Again? Offer me a small synopsis, please...
I watched Kenneth in Conspiracy (excellent movie: he plays one of the crazy nazis who planned the Final Solution...he embodied the luno character very well); and since Portugal buys everything it can from England, I have seen a few of his recent work.
We must face it, the Brits know how to do TV series...they are addictive.
Dracula Cheers
Max,
"Did you know that therapists undergo therapy (because of all the things they supposedly listen to)?"
I am not surprised that therapists need therapists. It must be tough to keep piling others problems on top of their problems.
"Dead Again? Offer me a small synopsis, please..."
Dead Again was a film in 1991 set in modern day Los Angeles and the 1940's. It is film noir
that explores a romance between two star-crossed lovers -- and the doomed passion they shared in their last lifetime. Directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Branagh and his then-wife Emma Thompson.
"I watched Kenneth in Conspiracy (excellent movie: he plays one of the crazy nazis who planned the Final Solution...he embodied the luno character very well);"
I didn't see it, but it sounds excellent. I like actors who play "crazy."
"We must face it, the Brits know how to do TV series...they are addictive."

Keeping The British End Up Cheers!
Lady A,
"I am not surprised that therapists need therapists. It must be tough to keep piling others problems on top of their problems."
So true! And they do listen to some heavy stuff...

Aaaah, yes...I watched that movie! I remember now...it was a good one. Well, I love movies that address this kind of issue: reincarnated lovers that meet again to complete their relationship (there are quite a few of this genre).
"I like actors who play "crazy.""
Me too.
"Brit ^5!"
