Halloween Spirit

An escaped mental patient was behind the counter cashiering groceries. Chunks of hair were missing from her head and she had electrodes attached to her temples from shock treatment.
A store manager dressed as a priest had a confessional sign at the manager’s station while ghouls and ghosts wandered throughout the aisles. As I left the store, a nun gave me her blessings and told me to be good.
People love Halloween. Every year I see skeletons and demons driving cars, in offices, stores and on the street digging into the “spirit” of halloween. Flaming, jack-o'-lanterns, bats, spider webs and goblins line lawns like a horror movie set.
So what is it that makes people so elated? Many folks are excited that they can let it all hang out, taking one mask off and putting another one on. For them it’s a day of celebration, fun and anything goes. Their spirits literally run free, but why does it take Halloween to let spirits run free?
Just today someone wished me a “Safe Halloween.” It took me back to those days when I went trick or treating and got lots of goodies. It was a fun period. But Halloween also brings out the dark side of people who want to harm others. It’s a period when we have to be aware of intentions and not fall prey to them.
We are forever faced with darkness and light. How do you find the balance?

I love Halloween for exactly the reasons you've expressed: it is a magical time when it is socially acceptable to display (some of) one's inner fantasies.
But confidently walking that middle road between light and dark is only really possible once we've experienced both sides to a degree. It is earned awareness.
I am astounded that there are people in the world who would want to poison or cause harm to children[like putting razors blades and pins in apples].
Hi Felicitas,
Yes, I agree. We can walk the road or fly above it, once we have experienced both sides.
Hi Uber,
And they all seem to come out on Halloween. That's why hospitals offer free x-rays for treats. There's nothing like radiation chocolate. ;D
I enjoy Halloween for the generosity people display toward kids: handing out sweets, laughing or offering praise for their costumes, and being willing to answer their door so many times in a three- or four-hour period.
As for balancing light and dark energies in this world, I recognize that darkness exists, but do my best to keep myself filled with light. I find that the more I can do that, and believe in the power of the light, the more I'm surrounded by it in others.
Hi Megan,
Those costumes are sooooo cute aren't they? Especially when the child is 2 to 5 years old.
May you always be filled with light.
