I agree with De Mello when he says that people who shout to know much about God and Jesus, are the ones that know less, because they are blinded by dogma! And to know God, and His issues, one needs to be Dogma Free!

I agree with you in your disagreement with De Mello: I also think that God is knowable! And He is knowable because He is inside each and every one of us; because we all have His essence inside.

Again, I agree: we don't have to agree with everything we read, we don't have to drink every single word the so-called masters say or write. The truth is inside each of us, and there are many ways of reaching that same truth.

I too agree with you 100%. If God was unknowable then how is it that I know him? And he me?

I do think that to know and understand God completely is an unobtainable thing while we are stuck here on this mortal plain.

I also think that it is a disgrace what has been done to faith through organized religion.

Why is it so hard for so many to understand that religion is man made.

Religion is not God. I walk with God everyday. And I feel his presence every single minute.

This could not be so if he was unknowable. God wants us to know him. He wants to seek him out.

And we are blessed if he touches us in this way with this understanding.

I too love the quote about the Sage.

Thanks for a wonderful commentary. It lifted me up today and gave me time to stop and ponder God's omnipotence.

I know that there are a large amount of people who are afraid of God and thus misinterpret the understanding of God.

Religion should be about expanding our awareness, but unfortunately it has become tainted by individuals who think that their ideals should be implemented as the only way to God. There are many paths to enlightenment.

I think what he may be saying is that all religion teaches doctrine which ironically is a lack of personal awareness - how we relate to the world in general. It is a radical concept to think that we can expand our knowledge without following one formula, but we really can by being in tune with ourselves. Stay tuned.

It is often assumed the soul is born in human form as a way to leave the abyss of its origin for a period. It is also assumed each soul returns to that place of infinity with new knowledge after different existences. The idea of "slipping back into darkness" is perhaps akin to an urge to reconnect with what is unseen. It does not have to be negative. God consciousness is a connection to the invisible reinforced by faith.

I agree with Mr. De Mello in that people often limit themselves through their perception. For example people who believe that God burns people forever in hellfire are limiting themselves with this belief.

But like you I don't think that God is unknowable. I think that it is probably difficult to figure out, but not impossible.

I don't think that "religion is supposed to be about lack of awareness," its supposed to be about expanded awareness, the ability to see what others don't see and know what others don't know.

As always, I've discovered that while it can be good to read about other's ideas, sometimes you need a filter. Like you said, don't assume that something is correct just because its in print.

In my first economics class in college, the professor drew a smallish circle on the board. He said the inside of the circle was what we knew (or thought we knew) and the perimeter was what we knew we didn't know. At the end of the semester, the circle should be much larger. In other words, our body of knowledge would have increased, but so would our awareness of just how much was out there that we did not comprehend...yet.
